Next week voters go the polls for the Scottish elections and for the first time they are being urged to factor Scotlands obesity crisis into the choices they make.

.

Obesity Action Scotland is challenging parliamentary candidates to sign up to five key measures as part of a campaign called Scotland Cant Stomach It Any Longer. The aim is to ensure the next Scottish Parliament is firmly committed to reducing the damage being done by growing obesity levels.

.

Figures show 65 per cent of Scottish adults are overweight, including 28 per cent who are obese. In other words, two in every three people who can vote next week are heavier than they should be.

.

Although the rise in numbers has slowed, the problem here is significantly worse than elsewhere, and Scotland is only second to Hungary on adult obesity levels.

.

While poor diet and lack of exercise are key factors, Obesity Action Scotland says the problem is too complex to expect it to be solved by individual behavioural changes. Thats where the politicians come in.

.

Established last summer to provide clinical leadership on our weight problem, Obesity Action Scotland believes a few actions could make a big difference. As well as supporting cuts in fat and sugar and actions to encourage healthy weight levels, they want politicians to look at what difference price and regulation could make to the Scottish diet as well as reinvesting revenue from the sugar tax into measures to discourage childhood obesity. They also believe the public sector should lead by example.

“I’m going to make you work hard,” a blonde and perfectly muscled fitness instructor screamed at me in a recent spinning class, “so you can have that second drink at happy hour!”

.

At the end of the 45-minute workout, my body was dripping with sweat. I felt like I had worked really, really hard. And according to my bike, I had burned more than 700 calories. Surely I had earned an extra margarita.

.

The spinning instructor was echoing a message we’ve been getting for years: As long as you get on that bike or treadmill, you can keep indulging  and still lose weight. It’s been reinforced by fitness gurus, celebrities, food and beverage companies like PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, and even public-health officials, doctors, and the first lady of the United States. Countless gym memberships, fitness tracking devices, sports drinks, and workout videos have been sold on this promise.

.

There’s just one problem: This message is not only wrong, it’s leading us astray in our fight against obesity.

.

To find out why, I read through more than 60 studies on exercise and weight loss. I also spoke to nine leading exercise, nutrition, and obesity researchers. Here’s what I learned.

.

Topics Covered in This Article

.

1) An evolutionary clue to how our bodies burn calories

2) Exercise is excellent for health

3) Exercise alone is almost useless for weight loss

4) Exercise accounts for a small portion of daily calorie burn

5) It’s hard to create a significant calorie deficit through exercise

6) Exercise can undermine weight loss in other, subtle ways

7) Exercise may cause physiological changes that help us conserve energy

8) Energy expenditure might have an upper limit

9) The government and the food industry are doling out unscientific advice

10) So what actually works for weight loss?

.

.

If you embark on a weight-loss journey that involves both adding exercise and cutting calories, Montclair’s Diana Thomas warned not to count those calories burned in physical activity toward extra eating.

.

“Pretend you didn’t exercise at all,” she said. “You will most likely compensate anyway so think of exercising just for health improvement but not for weight loss.”

A new study examining wildfires in California found that human activity explains as much about their frequency and location as climate influences. The researchers systematically looked at human (anthropogenic) behaviors and climate change together, which is unique and rarely attempted on an area of land this large.

.

The findings suggest many models of wildfire predictions do not accurately account for anthropogenic factors and may therefore be misleading when identifying the main causes/drivers of wildfires. The newest model proportionately accounts for climate change and human behavioral threats and allows experts to more accurately predict how much land is at risk of burning in California through 2050, which is estimated at more than 7 million acres in the next 25 years.

.

Climate change affects the severity of the fire season and the amount and type of vegetation on the land, which are major variables in predicting wildfires. However, humans contribute another set of factors that influence wildfires, including where structures are built, and the frequency and location of ignitions from a variety of sources  everything from cigarettes on the highway, to electrical poles that get blown down in Santa Ana winds. As a result of the near-saturation of the landscape, humans are currently responsible for igniting more than 90 percent of the wildfires in California.

.

“Individuals don’t have much control over how climate change will effect wildfires in the future. However, we do have the ability to influence the other half of the equation, those variables that control our impact on the landscape,” said Michael Mann, assistant professor of geography at George Washington University and lead author of the study. “We can reduce our risks by disincentivizing housing development in fire-prone areas, better managing public land, and rethinking the effectiveness of our current firefighting approach.”

.

The researchers found that by omitting the human influence on California wildfires, they were overstating the influence of climate change. The authors recommend considering climate change and human variables at the same time for future models.

.

Information is critical to determine wildfire risks

.

“There is widespread agreement about the importance of climate on wildfire at relatively broad scales. At more local scales, however, you can get the story quite wrong if you don’t include human development patterns,” said co-author Max Moritz, UC Cooperative Extension fire ecology specialist whose lab is at the University of California, Berkeley. “This is an important finding about how we model climate change effects, and it also confirms that getting a handle on where and how we build our communities is essential to limiting future losses.”

USDA Unveils New ‘Urban Agriculture Toolkit’ for Urban Farmers and Agri-business Entrepreneurs
Online Resource Draws on USDA’s and Partners’ Experience with Launching and Sustaining Urban Agriculture Operations Points Producers to Helpful Financial and Technical Resources
WASHINGTON, April 29, 2016  Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today unveiled the USDA Urban Agriculture Toolkit, a new resource created by USDA’s Know Your Farmer team to help entrepreneurs and community leaders successfully create jobs and increase access to healthy food through urban agriculture. From neighborhood gardens grown on repurposed lots, to innovative mobile markets and intensive hydroponic and aquaculture operations, urban food production is rapidly growing into a mature business sector in cities across the country.

.

“Urban agriculture helps strengthen the health and social fabric of communities while creating economic opportunities for farmers and neighborhoods,” Vilsack said. “USDA’s Urban Agriculture Toolkit compiles guidance from our Know Your Farmer team and many private partners into one comprehensive resource to help small-scale producers manage all aspects of their business. From protecting soil health to marketing to schools and grocery store chains, USDA has tools to meet the needs of this new breed of innovative urban farmer and small business owner.”

.

Industry estimates show U.S. local food sales totaled at least $12 billion in 2014, up from $5 billion in 2008, and experts anticipate that value to hit $20 billion by 2019. The numbers also show that these opportunities are helping to drive job growth in agriculture, increase entrepreneurship and expand food access and choice.

.

USDA’s Toolkit is an electronic document that helps urban and small farms navigate more than 70 helpful resources, including technical assistance and financing opportunities. It focuses on some of the most pressing challenges confronting urban producers such as land access, soil quality, water resources, capital and financing, infrastructure, market development, production strategies, and applying for federal, state or private foundation grants. University extension service partners in Chicago and Indianapolis helped develop cost estimates for starting urban farms and the toolkit includes information on best practices and check lists for start-ups and early-stage producers planning outdoor or indoor operations.

.

Some of the USDA resources featured in the Toolkit include:

.

Natural Resources Conservation Service technical and financial assistance for drip irrigation and seasonal high tunnels to extend the growing season.

.

Farm Services Agency microloans that provide up to $50,000 in financing for equipment, working capital or other expenses.
Food and Nutrition Service assistance to help urban farmers become authorized to accept SNAP, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefit cards.
Agricultural Marketing Service Farmers Market Promotion Program grants that support direct-to-consumer marketing activities in cities, and Local Food Promotion Program grants that support food hubs, farm-to-retail, and related projects.

.

National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program support for field trials in urban settings and urban farm planning and marketing guides.
Vilsack made the announcement today during an event opening a new school community garden at Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore. The idea for the Toolkit was originally conceived at a USDA Urban Agriculture roundtable held nearby in Baltimore last spring. A key result of that meeting was the creation of USDA’s Urban Agriculture Working Group (UAWG) that has assembled an inventory of existing department resources and worked to make them more readily accessible. The UAWG continues to actively engage urban producers around the country to identify evolving needs and support their success as a positive socioeconomic force in their communities.

.

Several Baltimore organizations in the vanguard of urban agriculture have developed resources that are included in the Toolkit as models for other communities like the City Farm Alliance’s Urban Agriculture How-To Guide, the Community Law Center’s Urban Agriculture Law Project Manual and the Green Pattern Book that helps local leaders map and identify productive new uses for vacant land.

.

During the event, Vilsack also highlighted expansion of a partnership between USDA and the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, increasing the number of opportunities for young people in Baltimore to serve as AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates, earning valuable professional and life experience while serving their community. These AmeriCorps members will serve with the Maryland Out of School Time (MOST) Network to provide summer opportunities for Baltimore City residents. They will join the more than 1,400 AmeriCorps members currently serving institutions and organizations throughout the city, including Frederick Douglass High School.

.

The Urban Agriculture Toolkit and the UAWG are part of USDA’s Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative (KYF2) supporting the Obama Administration’s work to strengthen economic bonds between rural and urban areas. Launched in 2009, KYF2 breaks down silos and takes stock of USDA programs that support the growing demand for local and regional food systems. Visit the KYF2 website atwww.usda.gov/knowyourfarmer to find local and regional food system resources in your community. .

Democrats and climate hawks share a dilemma, and that dilemma is millennials.

.

Millennials  people born between 1980 and 2000, give or take, depending on your definition  are, in many ways, an incredibly attractive political target. There’s a lot of them, they lean Democrat, they are more concerned about climate change than older cohorts, and they absolutely love clean energy.

.

The problem is, too few of them vote. “Between 1964 and 2012,” writes Derek Thompson at the Atlantic, “youth voter turnout in presidential elections has fallen below 50 percent, and Baby Boomers now outvote their children’s generation by a stunning 30 percentage points.” It’s even worse in midterm elections.

.

Now, eco-billionaire Tom Steyer is going to put some of his money toward changing that. His Super PAC, NextGen Climate, is launching a $25 million “national campaign to register and mobilize young voters in seven key battleground states to help elect climate champions to the White House and the Senate this fall.”

.

NextGen has released a strategy memo that outlines the rationale for their campaign. It contains all sorts of enlightening #MillennialFacts, which I will share with you now.

.

Millennials are numerous

.

In 2008, there were twice as many boomers eligible to vote as millennials. And there were three times more actual boomer votes cast.

.

That’s changing. Millennial voter registration has almost tripled since then.

.

In 2016, for the first time, millennials will be as large a share of the eligible voting population as boomers, roughly 30 percent. That said, boomers are still expected to outvote millennials this year.

.

But by 2020, millennials will outnumber boomers 34 to 28 percent, and cast more actual ballots. (These numbers are from the States of Change project; more here from Ron Brownstein.)

.

In this year’s election, NextGen is zeroing in on millennials in presidential swing states, where they’re a particularly significant voting block

Knowledge of Climate Change Basics Doesn’t Make People Care

Knowledge of climate change consequences
correlates with concern in some countries.

Improving the public’s understanding of anthropogenic climate change is
vital to cultivating the political will to do something about it. However,
a lot of research has shown that simply improving peoples understanding
wont necessarily do much to change their stance. This is because peoples
opinions on many topics rest largely on their political affiliation,
rather than how well they understand the science.

.

That leaves us with a thorny state of affairs. If improving science
education isnt going to shift public opinion, what can? A recent paper in
Nature Climate Change suggests that education might not be as hopeless a
cause as previously thoughtbut the work has some important limitations
that may not give us much cause for optimism.

.

A problem with previous research on the topic is that knowledge about
climate change was treated as a monolith, the authors of the new paper
argue. Past studies didn’t take into account that there are different
kinds of knowledge about climate change. While knowledge in one area might
be influenced by ideology, knowledge in other areas might not be.

.

So, for this study, the researchers divided their survey questions into
three different categories of knowledge: physical knowledge, causes
knowledge, and consequences knowledge. Recognizing that burning oil
produces CO2 fell into “physical knowledge.” Understanding of the human
influence on climate change went under causes knowledge, while knowledge
about the predicted outcomes of climate change was consequences knowledge.

.

Researchers surveyed 2,495 people across six countries: the US, Canada,
the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and China. In addition to asking
knowledge-focused questions, they also asked participants how concerned
they were about climate change. Other questions involved how much the
participants valued looking after themselves, looking after others, and
looking after nature and the environment.

.

Unsurprisingly, concern about nature and the environment was strongly
related to concern about climate change. What was surprising was that, in
all the countries, a higher degree of knowledge about the causes of
climate change was related to higher concern. Greater consequences
knowledge was linked to more concern everywhere except Canada and China.

.

Greater physical knowledgebasic climate literacywas actually linked to
lower concern. This finding gels with previous research suggesting that
scientifically better-informed people might be better at finding ways to
disregard research they don’t like.
