Donald Trump resumed his war of words with the parents of a fallen Muslim-American soldier, writing on Twitter that by questioning whether the soldier’s mother was “allowed” to speak at the Democratic National Committee because of her Muslim faith, he was making an understandable response to having been “viciously attacked” during her husband’s speech.

.

Campaigning in Cleveland, Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, seized on Trump’s weekend of troubles to ram home a point about her opponent.

.

“I do tremble before those who would scapegoat other Americans, who would insult people because of their religion, their ethnicity, their disability,” Clinton said Sunday during an appearance at the Imani Temple Ministries in Cleveland, a predominantly black church.

.

On Saturday, Clinton said that “somebody who attacks everybody has something missing.”

.

The Republican presidential nominee, who often doubles down, rather than backs down, on controversial statements, had already scrambled during an interview with ABC’s “This Week”  to respond to the widely hailed speech on Thursday by Khizr Khan about his son, Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed while serving in Iraq in 2004.

.

snip

.

Ghazala Khan responded in the Washington Post Sunday, writing that Trump “doesnt know what the word sacrifice means,” and explained  why she remained silent on the DNC stage in Philadelphia.

.

“My husband asked me if I wanted to speak, but I told him I could not,” Khan wrote, adding that she can’t be in rooms with pictures of her son and had to have relatives clean out his closet after he died.  “Every day I feel the pain of his loss.”

.

“I was viciously attacked by Mr. Khan at the Democratic Convention.  Am I not allowed to respond? Hillary voted for the Iraq War, not me!” Trump tweeted on Sunday. The billionaire’s reference to his own experiences spawned a trending Twitter handle on Saturday, #TrumpSacrifies.

.

Khizr Khan, a Charlottesville, Virginia, resident who immigrated from Pakistan and holds an advanced law degree from Harvard, said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that his wife had edited the speech, imploring “patriotic Americans that may vote for Donald Trump “to reconsider in light of his `hatred’ and `fear-mongering.’ Khan also denied, on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Trump’s suggestion that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign wrote the speech.

.

“This person is total incapable of empathy,” he said on CNN. “He is a black soul, and this is totally unfit for the leadership of this beautiful country.”

.

Trump’s interview with ABC prompted swift condemnation from Republicans as well as the Clinton campaign.

.

“If youre going to be leader of the free world, you have to be able to accept criticism, and Mr. Trump cant, said South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, who has been a leading critic of Trump since dropping his own presidential bid in December. “The problem is, unacceptable doesnt even begin to describe it,”  Graham said, according to the New York Times.

.

snip

.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell issued statements in defense of the Khan and his family, while not mentioning Trump.

.

snip

.

“To defend Trump attacking the Khans is to be cloaked in shame. It’s a Joe McCarthy moment & you’re failing. Have you no sense of decency?” Stevens said on Twitter.

A vicious flash flood ripped through Ellicott City, Md., Saturday night, leaving at least one person dead and two missing as it destroyed roads, homes and businesses.

.

Video and photos shot after the flood depict a ravaged downtown: bricks torn from sidewalks, streets caved in, cars overturned, storefronts ripped opened, first floors gutted. Gov. Larry Hogan (R) declared a state of emergency.

.

A womans body was found Sunday morning, according to town spokesman Andy Barth, who noted that the death toll may rise. At least two residents are missing.

.

Historic Main Street looked like a scene from a disaster movie, said Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman (D). I know there are going to be a lot of people who will lose their homes and apartments and businesses that will have a hard time rebuilding.

.

On Sunday morning  when the 244-year-old towns epicenter would normally have bustled with visitors  Kittleman and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D) joined Hogan to tour the wreckage of an area that has been struck by floods before.

.

Weve got a long road ahead of us, Hogan said. We are going to do everything we can to immediately help people, make sure there is housing, get things back on track.

.

One dramatic video posted to Facebook shows three men forming a human chain through the raging water to reach a woman trapped inside her car.

.

I cant do this, the woman yells as she crawls halfway out.

.

You have to, someone shouts back.

.

Still too far away to reach the woman, the man closest to her lets go of the chain and, just after he is nearly swept away, takes the driver in his arms and drags her to safety.

.

snip

.

Officials asked residents to remain patient as emergency crews assess the damage and work to ensure structures are safe. Hogan and other elected officials said the county, state and federal governments will work together to make sure the affected area is rebuilt.

.

This is not going to be cleared up in a day or two, Kittleman said.

.

Cummings, who has an office on Main Street and knows many of the citys business owners, said the rebuilding effort will take a lot of money and a lot of patience.

.

Hundreds offered condolences on social media to the unincorporated town of 68,000.

.

snip

.

Just before midnight, midnight, to make it possible to access state resources. At least four roads were closed, and emergency shelters opened.

.

County officials reported numerous water rescues and evacuations, some involving motorists trapped in the sudden torrents.

.

High water also was reported in Saturday night Montgomery County. Georgia Avenue at Brookeville Road in Montgomery was reported closed in both directions, with a foot of water flowing across the road.

.

In Baltimore County, authorities said flooding and rain were especially severe on the west side, with many calls for rescue from stalled vehicles.

.

Official rainfall figures from Baltimores Inner Harbor illustrated the intensity of Saturday nights rainfall. The National Weather Service reported 2.28 inches in three hours. Almost 1 inches fell between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.

.

Reports indicated that rain was considerably heavier in Howard County.

.

About 900 homes and businesses were reported without electricity in Baltimores southwestern corner.

.

snip

.

The days downpours came after an afternoon of oppressive heat, raising Washingtons temperature to 90 for the 10th consecutive day and the 22nd time this month.

.

For all the months heat, no high-temperature records were set, and only one was tied  the 100 degrees on July 25.

Frank Mermoud, a key figure at the recent Republican convention, has strong business ties with Ukraine, to which others in Trumps orbit have been linked as questions grow over the candidates interests in Russia and view of its president

Composite of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin

Donald Trump travelled to Moscow in 2013 to meet Vladimir Putin hoping to discuss plans for a Trump Tower near Red Square.

.

A key figure at the Republican national convention where Donald Trump was nominated for president has strong business ties with Ukraine, the Guardian has learned.

.

The party platform, written at the convention in Cleveland last week, removed references to arming Ukraine in its fight against pro-Russia rebels, who have received material support from the Kremlin. Trumps links to Russia are under scrutiny after a hack of Democratic national committee emails, allegedly by Russian agents.

.

The coordinator of the Washington diplomatic corps for the Republicans in Cleveland was Frank Mermoud, a former state department official involved in business ventures in Ukraine via Cub Energy, a Black Sea-focused oil and gas company of which he is a director. He is also on the board of the US Ukraine Business Council.

.

Mermoud has longstanding ties to Trumps campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, who in 2010 helped pro-Russia Viktor Yanukovych refashion his image and win a presidential election in Ukraine. Manafort was brought in earlier this year to oversee the convention operations and its staffing.

.

Three sources at the convention also told the Guardian that they saw Philip Griffin, a long-time aide to Manafort in Kiev, working with the foreign dignitaries programme.

.

After years of working in the Ukraine for Paul and others, it was surprising to run into Phil working at the convention, one said.

.

The change to the platform on arming Ukraine was condemned even by some Republicans. Senator Rob Portman of Ohio described it as deeply troubling. Veteran party operative and lobbyist Charlie Black said the new position in the platform doesnt have much support from Republicans, adding that the change was unusual.

.

Thousands of Democratic National Committee emails, meanwhile, were hacked and published by WikiLeaks on the eve of the partys convention in Philadelphia this week. The mails showed that officials, who are meant to remain impartial, favoured Hillary Clinton and discussed ways to undermine her rival, Bernie Sanders. The leak led to the resignation of DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

.

Since the DNC hack became public, hacks against the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Clinton campaign have been reported.

.

The FBI is investigating, with all signs pointing to Russian involvement, though Moscow rejects this but experts argue Vladimir Putin has attempted in the past to damage western democracy, saying Russian security agencies have made cyberattacks on French, Greek, Italian and Latvian targets during elections. In 2014, malware was discovered in Ukrainian election software that would have robbed it of legitimacy.

.

Alina Polyakova, deputy director of the Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center at the Atlantic Council, said: We cant say 100% that Mr Putin had a hand in any of this but this kind of meddling in other countries affairs is part of Russias toolkit. Its a kind of asymmetric warfare. To me, this looks like something straight from the Russian secret service playbook, but Im surprised at how brazen theyve been.

.

Trump and his campaign have denied any connection to the hack but on Wednesday he ignited a firestorm by calling on Russia to find 30,000 emails deleted from the private server used by Clinton while she was secretary of state in the Obama administration. I think you will probably be mightily rewarded by our press, he said. He later claimed that he was being sarcastic.

.

Analysts suggest three primary motivations for the WikiLeaks email dump, quite probably overlapping: doing harm to the US political process to undermine its credibility; doing harm to Clinton (WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is no friend); and boosting Trump, who has heaped praise on Putin and last week broke from Republican policy by suggesting the US would not automatically come to the aid of Nato allies and saying he would consider recognising Crimea as Russian territory.

.

James Rubin, a former assistant secretary of state now advising the Clinton campaign, said: If you are the president of Russia and you have stated over and over again that you are concerned that the United States through its enlargement of Nato, through its policies in Europe towards Ukraine, towards Georgia, towards other countries in Central Asia  [is] putting pressure on Russia, and you are the president of a country that has been seeking to undermine that process and roll back the independent Europe thats whole and free and push it back, thats your foreign policy objective.

.

So then you look at the United States and you say, Well, which partys policies would be more likely to allow me to achieve my objectives? Thats the way that a Russian leader would think.

.

With Democrats and journalists now trawling through Trumps past dealings with all the oligarchs, as he once put it, as far back as the time of the Soviet Union, the candidate has repeatedly and angrily stated that he has zero, nothing to do with Russia. He has however continued to refuse to release his tax returns, which could prove his claim definitively.

.

snip

.

Chris Coons, a Democratic senator for Delaware, said: That seems to be a striking allegation to make because that would be unbelievably irresponsible. I have heard in the last day troubling allegations of the relationship between Paul Manafort and players in the Ukraine who are very closely tied to Putin and the Kremlin but I have no evidence about it.

.

Coons added: At this point we should allow the intelligence community and our foreign policy leaders to pursue whatever leads there may be to whatever conclusion they will reach. I do think the degree of irresponsibility shown by Donald Trump in literally urging on an illegal surveillance act by a hostile foreign power raises strong enough questions that it merits investigation. Its truly unsettling and something that deserves out attention.

.

Jim Lewis, a senior vice-president and programme director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noted that Russians had hacked into the DNC and its Republican counterpart in 2008 and 2012, but those hacks were not leaked.

.

The difference this time is the leak, he said. We can say with some certainty that its Russian hacking, but we should be cautious about saying they were behind the leak.

You Have to Watch this Incredible, Trump-Destroying
Speech by the Father of a Fallen Muslim Soldier

By Patrick Hogan

.

The father of a Muslim U.S. soldier killed in Iraq blasted Donald Trump Saturday for suggesting his wife was “not allowed” to speak during a powerful speech at this week’s Democratic National Convention.

.

“Running for president is not an entitlement to disrespect [a] Gold Star family and Gold Star mother, not realizing her pain,” Khizr Khan said in an interview on ABC News Saturday.

.

“Shame on him! Shame on his family!” Khan said. “He is not worthy of our comments. He has no decency. He is void of decency. He has a dark heart,” Khan said.

.

In an interview to be broadcast Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” Trump implied that Khan’s wife, Ghazala Khan, “wasn’t allowed to have anything to say” when she stood next to her husband at the convention.

.

The Khans’ son, U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, was killed by a car bomb in 2004 while guarding the gates of his base in Iraq, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers and civilians.

.

At the convention, Khizr Khan questioned whether Trump had read the U.S. constitution, and said Trump has “sacrificed nothing and no one.” Trump has proposed a temporary ban on Muslims from entering the U.S.

.

Ghazala Khan on Friday night told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on Friday that she was anxious during her husband’s speech, knowing her son’s photo would appear behind her. She also spoke on ABC News Saturday.

.

“Sacrifice  I don’t think he knows the meaning of the sacrifice, meaning of the word,” Ghazala Khan told ABC News. “Because when I was standing there all America felt my pain, without saying a single word. Everybody felt that pain, but I don’t know how he missed that.”

Trump Responds to Khizr Khan with Insults. Republican Party,
This is Your Last Jumping-Off Point

.Donald Trump weighs in on the powerful testimony of Khizr and Ghazala Khan, whose son was killed by a car bomb while serving in Iraq. It was, as has become normal for the Republican candidate, repulsive.

.

If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.

.

And has Trump sacrificed, as the Kahn family has?

.

I think I’ve made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. I’ve had tremendous success. I think I’ve done a lot.
He is, of course, completely unfit for the presidency. More than that, he is a monster. A sociopath. A man who is so consumed with his needs and with the political convenience of denying the very humanity of the other, in this case a Muslim American father and mother and son, that he dismisses their very humanity. The wife was suspiciously silent, he declares. The sacrifice of a son was little compared to the sacrifice of his own “success,” he opines. And were they even the words of grieving parents, really?

.

Who wrote that? Did Hillary’s script writers write it?

.

Again Khizr Khan has called upon Republicans Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan, by name, to repudiate Trump’s rhetoric and hatred. That they remain silent is proof enough that the Republican party is both dead, as ideological force, and very much deserves to be. They stand by Trump because they would rather win the presidency, even at the long odds Trump provides, than stand against his anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-other sociopathies. There is no party ideology left, other than the one that demands they be put in charge of things. There is no pushback to the forces of racism and dark nationalism leftit is not worth it to them, they cannot risk it, they have no countering ideology of their own to even push back with. The partys media mouthpiece, Fox, did not provide their viewers Khans own testimony. They hid it under a commercial, as they hid most other fragments of testimony from the inconvenient other that presented themselves onstage to dispute Trumps dark paranoia.

Donald Trump Criticizes Muslim Family of Slain U.S. Soldier, Drawing Ire

Donald J. Trump belittled the parents of a slain Muslim soldier who had strongly denounced Mr. Trump during the Democratic National Convention, saying that the soldiers father had delivered the entire speech because his mother was not allowed to speak.

.

Mr. Trumps comments, in an interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News that will air on Sunday, drew quick and widespread condemnation and amplified calls for Republican leaders to distance themselves from their presidential nominee. With his implication that the soldiers mother had not spoken because of female subservience expected in some traditional strains of Islam, his comments also inflamed his hostilities with American Muslims.

.

Khizr Khan, the soldiers father, lashed out at Mr. Trump in an interview on Saturday, saying his wife had not spoken at the convention because it was too painful for her to talk about her sons death.

.

Mr. Trump, he said, is devoid of feeling the pain of a mother who has sacrificed her son.

.

Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, a rival of Mr. Trumps in the Republican primaries who has refused to endorse him, castigated him on Twitter. Theres only one way to talk about Gold Star parents: with honor and respect, he wrote, using the term for surviving family members of those who died in war.

.

And Hillary Clinton, Mr. Trumps Democratic opponent, said he was not a normal presidential candidate.

.

Someone who attacks everybody has something missing, she told a crowd at a campaign stop in Youngstown, Ohio. I dont know what it is. Im not going to get into that.

.

Mr. Khans speech at the convention in Philadelphia was one of the most powerful given there. It was effectively the Democratic response to comments Mr. Trump has made implying many American Muslims have terrorist sympathies or stay silent when they know ones who do. Mr. Trump has called to ban Muslim immigration as a way to combat terrorism.

.

snip

.

He criticized Mr. Trump, saying he consistently smears the character of Muslims, and pointedly challenged what sacrifices Mr. Trump had made. Holding a pocket-size copy of the Constitution, he asked if Mr. Trump had read it. Mr. Khans wife stood silently by his side.

.

Mr. Trump told Mr. Stephanopoulos that Mr. Khan seemed like a nice guy and that he wished him the best of luck. But, he added, If you look at his wife, she was standing there, she had nothing to say, she probably  maybe she wasnt allowed to have anything to say, you tell me.

.

Mr. Trump also told Maureen Dowd of The New York Times on Friday night, Id like to hear his wife say something.

.

In a statement late Saturday, Mr. Trump called Captain Khan a hero, and reiterated his belief that the United States should bar Muslims from entering the country.

.

While I feel deeply for the loss of his son, he added, Mr. Khan, who has never met me, has no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the Constitution, (which is false) and say many other inaccurate things.

.

snip

.

Trump is totally void of any decency because he is unaware of how to talk to a Gold Star family and how to speak to a Gold Star mother, Mr. Khan said on Saturday.

.

Ms. Khan did speak on Friday to MSNBCs Lawrence ODonnell, saying she cannot even come in the room where his pictures are.

.

When she saw her sons photograph on the screen behind her on the stage in Philadelphia, she said, I couldnt take it.

.

I controlled myself at that time, she said, while choking back tears. It is very hard.

Khizr Khan Responds to the Latest from Trump: ‘Typical of a Person without a Soul’

.

.

Khan said it is the massive response to his speech, not the speech itself, that is causing the trouble to Trump.

.

snip

.

In a series of statements Friday and Saturday, Trump responded to Khans speech, first telling the New York Times that he wondered whether Khans wife, who stood silently by his side as he spoke, was allowed to speak, a response that drew widespread, bipartisan condemnation. In a written statement later Saturday, Trump  who has proposed suspending Muslim immigration to the U.S.  elaborated that Khans son, who was posthumously awarded a Gold Star and Purple Heart, was a hero who should be honored. He went on to say that the real problem here are the radical Islamic terrorists who killed him, and the efforts of these radicals to enter our country to do us further harm.

.

Responding to Trumps latest statement, Khan said, This is faked empathy.

.

What he said originally  that defines him .?.?. People are upset with him. He realizes, and his advisers feel that [his original statement] was a stupid mistake. That proves that this person is void of empathy. He is unfit for the stewardship of this great country. You think he will empathize with this country, with the suffering of this countrys poor people? He showed his true colors when he disrespected this countrys most honorable mother all the snake oil he is selling, and my patriotic, decent Americans are falling for that. Republicans are falling for that. And I can only appeal to them. Reconsider. Repudiate. Its a moral obligation. A person void of empathy for the people he wishes to lead cannot be trusted with that leadership. To vote is a trust. And it cannot be placed in wrong hands.

.

In response to Trumps attack on his wife, Khan said the Republican nominees words were typical of a person without a soul.

.

Khan said his wife didnt speak because she breaks down when she sees her sons photograph  a huge one of which was projected onto a screen behind the stage at the convention.

.

Emotionally and physically  she just couldnt even stand there, and when we left, as soon as we got off camera, she just broke down. And the people inside, the staff, were holding her, consoling her. She was just totally emotionally spent. Only those parents that have lost their son or daughter could imagine the pain that such a memory causes. Especially when a tribute is being paid. I was holding myself together, because one of us had to be strong. Normally, she is the stronger one. But in the matter of Humayun, she just breaks down any time anyone mentions it.

.

snip

.

Speaking of Trumps proposed suspension of Muslim immigration, Khan said that the candidate is simply pandering for votes.

.

This is my country too, he said, adding that Trump lacks understanding, that most Muslims are victims of terrorism, not perpetrators  and they condemn it. He lacks awareness of these issues. He doesnt realize there are patriotic Muslim Americans in this country willing to lay their lives for this country. We are a testament to that.

Fury as Trump Mocks Muslim Soldier’s Mother Ghazala Khan

BBC News

http://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-36935175

.

.

Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has attracted outrage by mocking a dead US Muslim soldier’s mother.

.

Ghazala Khan stood silently next to her husband as he attacked Mr Trump in an emotional speech to the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.
Mr Trump suggested she may not have been allowed to speak.

.

Republicans and Democrats said the Republican candidate’s comments were no way to talk of a hero’s mother. Mrs Khan said she was upset by his remarks.

.

Last week her husband Khizr Khan told Democrats Mr Trump had sacrificed “nothing and no-one” for his country.

.

At the convention in Philadelphia, he said his son would not even have been in America if it had been up to Mr Trump, who has called for a ban on Muslims entering the US.

.

Humayun Khan was killed by a car bomb in 2004 in Iraq at the age of 27.

.

snip

.

But former president Bill Clinton, the husband of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, said: “I cannot conceive how he can say that about a Gold Star mother.”

.

Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Kaine said Mr Trump’s remarks were inappropriate.

.

“He was kind of trying to turn that into some kind of ridicule,” he said, quoted by AP. “It just demonstrates again kind of a temperamental unfitness. If you don’t have any more sense of empathy than that, then I’m not sure you can learn it.”

.

snip

.

Some Republicans also rounded on their candidate.

.

Ohio Governor John Kasich, a former rival to Mr Trump for the Republican nomination, tweeted: “There’s only one way to talk about Gold Star parents: with honour and respect.”

.

In an interview for ABC on Saturday, Ghazala Khan said: “When I was standing there, all of America felt my pain, without a single word. I don’t know how he missed that.”

.

“Please Mr Trump, feel that pain and you will be better.
“I was upset when I heard that I didn’t say anything because I was in pain.”

.

Khizr Khan said that Mr Trump was “devoid of feeling the pain of a mother who has sacrificed her son”.

.

“Running for president is not an entitlement to disrespect… a Gold Star mother, shame on him,” he said.

.

“He has no decency, he has a dark heart.”

.

Mrs Khan said on Friday that she did not speak during her husband’s speech because she was still overcome with grief and could not look at her son’s photos without crying.

.

.

Donald Trumps slander of Captain Humayun Khans family is horrifying,
even for Trump

What kind of person is Donald Trump?

Ezra Klein

July 30, 2016, 2:07 p.m. ET

Vox

http://www.vox.com/2016/7/30/12332922/donald-trump-khan-muslim

.

.

The most emotional moment of the Democratic National Convention was the speech by Khizr Khan, the bereaved father of Army Captain Humayun Khan. With his wife Ghazala by his side, Khan recalled his sons character, his faith, his patriotism  and, ultimately, his courageous death in the service of the country he loved, and the fellow soldiers he was protecting.

.

And, yes, the Khan family is Muslim. Under Trumps proposed policies, they would be innately suspect; had he been president when they immigrated to America, they wouldve been barred from entering, and Humayun Khan never would have served.

.

“Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery?” Khan asked Trump. “Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”

.

On ABC this morning, Trump responded to Khans speech. I dont know what I expected from Trump. Maybe he would show some gentleness. Maybe he would show some empathy. Maybe he would refuse to comment. Maybe he would attack Hillary Clinton and Barack Obamas foreign policy leadership. All of those responses would have been fine.

.

Trumps actual response, though, wasnt fine.

.

“If you look at his wife, she was standing there,” he said, on national television. “She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”

.

This wasnt a slip of the tongue. In an interview with Maureen Dowd, Trump took the same tack. “Id like to hear his wife say something,” he said.

.

Lets be very clear about what Trump is doing here: as ABC wrote, hes suggesting “Khans wife didnt speak because she was forbidden to as a Muslim.” This is bullshit. It is flatly, verifiably, false. But thats almost beside the point.

.

Trump listened to a speech by the bereaved father of a fallen Muslim soldier and used it to slander the fallen soldiers family. That was his response. That is his character.

.

At this point, I honestly dont know what to say. I dont have new language for this, I havent found another way of saying this isnt okay, this isnt kind, this isnt decent. Instead, Ill note James Fallowss response. He quotes Joseph Welch, speaking to Senator Joseph McCarthy in 1954.

.

“Until this moment,” he said, “I think I never really gauged your cruelty.”

.

If you would like to see Ghazala Khan speak, you can do so in this interview she gave to MSNBCs Lawrence ODonnell. As Fallows writes, she breaks down sobbing while speaking of her son. It suggests she let her husband give the DNC speech for a simple reason: she remains overwhelmed by grief.

.

This is the woman Trump decided to slander. This is the gauge of his cruelty.

.

This isn’t partisan. This isn’t left vs. right. Mitt Romney never would have said this. John McCain never would have said this. George W. Bush never would have said this. John Kerry never would have said this. This is what I mean when I write that the 2016 election isn’t simply Democrat vs. Republican, but normal vs. abnormal.

World Health Organization Chief Says Zika Risk Is Low at Rio Olympics

by  Reuters

July 29, 2016, 5:32 AM EDT

Fortune

http://fortune.com/2016/07/29/who-chief-zika-risk-low-rio-olympics/

.

.

The head of the world health body said shes going to the games.
The risk of Zika virus infections at the Olympic Games is both low and manageable, the chief of the World Health Organization said on Friday, a week before the event kicks off in Rio de Janeiro.

.

Nearly half a million people are expected to visit for the Games, many from the United States. Worries about security, the Zika virus and an economic crisis could deter travelers, with just under a third of event tickets as yet unsold.

.

Brazil has been hardest hit by the disease outbreak, and many physicians, competitors and potential visitors have expressed fears the Olympics could serve as a catalyst to spread the virus globally.

.

We feel that the risk of Zika infection is low for an individual, and it is manageable, Margaret Chan, director general of the world health body, told reporters in the Chinese capital.

.

As long as individuals take appropriate personal protective measures, including the use of a mosquito repellent, including wearing clothing that prevents mosquito bites, she added.

.

The WHO assessment factored in the latest understanding of the disease and actions taken by Brazil, said Chan, adding that she would be going to the games in Rio de Janeiro.

World Health Organization Chief Says Zika Risk Is Low at Rio Olympics

It seems half a lifetime ago, when Zika was nothing more than a hotly-contested Scrabble suggestion, that Rio de Janeiro won the 2016 Olympics on a call to live your passion. Theirs had been a bid full of brio, vibrancy and caipirinha-fuelled verve, their victory toasted by huge plumes of silver glitter that rose high into the Copacabana evening.

.

Jacques Rogge, then president of the International Olympic Committee, acclaimed Rios campaign as one with absolutely no flaw. Even a newly-inaugurated President Obama, still full of his audacity of hope, could not seize the day for his hometown Chicago in the face of a Brazilian juggernaut, graciously bowing to the prevailing will to stage the first Games in South America. It was a moment of affirmation not just for a country, but a continent.

.

Seven years on, one could be forgiven for imagining that this was all just a sick joke. The slickness with which Rio projected itself to the world, in videos framed by Christ the Redeemer and the soft plucks of flamenco guitar, has since unspooled into a hellish vision of disease, dysfunction and drug cheats galore.

.

This, at least, is the perception beloved of Jeremiahs who specialise in such quadrennial angst. Every four years, the story is the same, as an Olympic host city emerges somehow unscathed from hand-wringing predictions that nobody will come, nothing will be finished on time or, in Rios case, that clouds of mosquitoes will descend from Sugarloaf Mountain like the third plague of Egypt.

.

Somewhere, in the midst of all this exaggerated horror, there is a wonderful spectacle straining to be unleashed. Sandwiched between all the doom-mongering and the subsequent agitating about legacy are the finest 17 days of sport the world can conjure. Soon enough, all the tales of crime-ridden back streets and malfunctioning showers in the athletes village will be superseded by Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps and a cast of thousands striving to make Rio remembered for happier reasons.
