Physical exercise is great for the mind, body and spirit. And playing a team sport can be good for learning accountability, dedication and building confidence and leadership skills.

.

But participating in athletics isnt without its risks, whether youre an elite athlete, a weekend warrior or take an occasional jog or bike ride.

.

Sports medicine experts say thats why its important to learn how to prevent injuries and look beyond your medicine cabinet to treat some of the most common sports injuries.

.

And once youve recovered, its also good to know how to keep from suffering the same injury again.

.

A lot of injuries happen within the first few months of a person taking up a new activity, said Dr. James Borchers, director of sports medicine at Ohio State Universitys Wexner Medical Center.

.

The last thing we want people to do is to defeat themselves before they even get started.

.

One way to reduce the risk of this happening is by talking to your doctor about the appropriate level of exercise for your fitness level and abilities, he said. Many injuries occur when people do too much, too quickly.

.

When starting an exercise routine or a new workout program, start slowly, Borchers said. You should gradually build up the intensity, duration and frequency.

.

.

An Australian ABC affiliate recently ran a story meant to assuage any fears that parents who choose to have only one child may harbor regarding their children’s well-being.

.

In answer to troubling questions regarding such children’s loneliness, the story quips “evidence shows there are very few drawbacks to a one-child family.” Parents interviewed for the story believed that by having only one child, they were able to afford better schooling, and had more time to devote to that child’s well-being.

.

They were also able to pursue more leisure time for themselves, and more time in fulfilling careers, which they assert makes them better parents. Professor Toni Falbo of the University of Texas argues that concerns about having only one child come from those who have “suffered through the experience of bringing up several children,” and are eager to justify that experience.

.

But research reveals that no amount of private schooling and one-on-one time with parents can obliterate at least one negative outcome for only children-physical health.

.

Whether because of government policy or cultural trends, a growing fraction of the world’s children are growing up without siblings. If their parents invest heavily in their upbringing, these only children may enjoy some economic advantages over peers with siblings. But growing up without a brother or sister entails significant drawbacks, one of which was recently highlighted by a Japanese study finding that only children are distinctively vulnerable to weight problems during childhood and early adolescence.

.

Affiliated with Tokyo’s National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition, the authors of the new study express concern about the number of Japanese children with weight problems: “approximately 10% and 8% of 12-year-old boys and girls, respectively, were overweight or obese in 2015.” Though these percentages are down a bit from what health officials saw in 2000, when they began addressing the problem, the authors of the new study still regard them as “substantial.”

.

Childhood obesity is hardly peculiar to Japan. The researchers see “Japan follow[ing] the global trends,” with “the prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity increas[ing worldwide] in the late 20th century,” pushing the number of preschool children who were overweight or obese in 2014 to approximately 41 million.

.

But whether they are looking at Tokyo or Toronto, the researchers stress that “prevention of childhood overweight and obesity is an important public health issue. Excess weight in children may negatively affect their lifetime health, increasing the risks of obesity in adulthood and consequent premature mortality and morbidity from non-communicable diseases.”

.

snip

.

The researchers interpret their findings against the backdrop of several studies from around the world likewise finding “an increased likelihood of overweight and obesity among children living with no siblings.”  These studies reveal that living without siblings exposes children to “obesogenic behaviors and environments at home.”

.

The Japanese scholars note-for instance-that previous studies in Australia and Canada have established that, “compared with children with siblings, those without siblings spent more time in low-intensity physical activity each day and less time in moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity.”

Comfort Food, Lack of Exercise and Poverty Fuel Obesity Rate

Too much Comfort foods, lack of exercise, and Mississippi’s poverty rate put the state at number two on the Obesity scale nationwide. As part of our new series “State of Obesity.” MPB’s Desare Frazier takes a look at some of the issues making and keeping Mississippians fat.

.

Four to 5 times a week, Amanda Cole of Raymond, is at the gym working out. Running on the treadmill isn’t the 37-year old’s favorite exercise.

.

Amanda laughs, “I feel good, I feel fine,” says Amanda. “You feel fine,” saying Lane.

.

“Cardiovascular. This is where we burn fat. This what a lot of people don’t like to do,” said Lane.

.

That’s Certified Personal Trainer Lavon Lane. He’s helping Cole reach her weight loss goals. When she began exercising in January, she  weighed 286 pounds. Cole’s been overweight since she was a child and chalked the excess weight up to poor eating habits and lack of exercise.

.

“I wanted to get healthier for myself and my children. I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t on maintenance medications and I wanted to just change my lifestyle,” said Cole.

.

So far, the married mother of four is dropping 10 pounds per month. Lane says there are multiple reasons why people are fat. Bad eating habits and lack of knowledge both play a role. He says when people come to him they’re overeating to relieve stress.

.

“And the majority of the time, food brings us comfort. Snacks brings us comfort, a lot of sugary items,” said Lane.

.

Lane says the old adage to clean your plate encourages overeating. He tells his clients to eat what he calls “clean foods,” such as green vegetables, lean fish, and grill and bake meals instead of frying. Lane says busy schedules make it hard to find time to eat right and exercise.

.

“Our bodies get hungry we find something quick and fast to eat, no healthy food involved that. Another reason is just laziness,” said Lane.

.

Lane says getting to the root cause of obesity can mean facing family and emotional issues.  That’s what Falasha Reed is doing. The 45-year old married mother of four is the head nurse at the G.A. Carmichael Community Health Center in Canton. At 323 pounds she has high blood pressure, sleep apnea and her joints ache.  It began when she was born premature.

.

“Any time you’re a smaller child, they push to eat, push you to eat, they push you to eat. So, then I started eating. Then I stuttered so you know compensating for the stuttering and kids picking on me I ate,” said Reed.

.

Reed says her father’s side of the family is big and relatives tell her she’s supposed to be large too. She’s  meeting with the community health center’s Medical Director, Dr. Takita Murriel.

.

“Tell me about your diet,” said Dr. Murriel. “How is my diet? It is awful. I don’t eat until lunch time. I’ll be honest with you. I don’t eat until lunch time and Cokes are my vice. I drink about 3 or 4 cokes a day,” said Reed.

.

Dr. Murriel says 90 percent of her patients are overweight. She says getting people to change their eating habits is hard. They don’t want to give up the taste of fat and salt like bacon, commonly used in southern cooking.

.

“I’ve had patients come in, they’re diabetic with high blood pressure and say they ate a piece of sausage and a piece of bacon and a biscuit for breakfast. And it’s like ‘ok no mame, that’s just not how we need to do this,’ “said Dr. Murriel.

.

For low-income patients, Dr. Murriel says lack of money is a barrier to eating healthy, leaving people with no option but to buy foods higher in calories.

To Fight Child Obesity –
Let Children Play Outdoors More with Their Friends

Instead of shrinking pizzas and burgers, it is vital to get children to play outside unsupervised  and not just for the exercise

Obesity is an environmental issue not a disease. Children growing up in the 1950s and 1960s were not obese. Virtually all people over 60 (and many younger) remember walking to infant school without an adult. Most travelled unaccompanied from the age of five after being taken for a couple of weeks by a parent. Children would also be able to run around in their own street and go on errands at this age. In other words, they had daily healthy exercise at no cost in money or time to the government and their parents.

.

It is known from zoos that if mammals cannot run around outside their houses they get obese and display repetitive behaviour and poor mental health. Crucially, if their environment is improved  by enabling them to run around more freely  their health improves.

Our children are being offered solutions that would not be acceptable for mammals in zoos. If zoo experts said that the main solution to obesity caused by being penned in was to replace some of the mammals food with smaller portions of calorie-free synthetic food, there would be an outcry from animal lovers. Yet this is what PHE is doing.

.

The NHS offers tailored, personalised help to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes, including education on healthy eating and lifestyle, help to lose weight and bespoke physical exercise programmes  an expensive solution, which will reach relatively few people and divert resources from areas where treatment is needed.

.

Experts also constantly blame parents for not taking their children to the park or countryside more often. But most parents never did regularly take their children out to play. They didnt have to  their children played happily in the street.

.

It is vital that children do play outdoors unsupervised, and not just for the exercise. In any game, children have to agree the rules for themselves, they have to play fairly (or the fun stops), they settle disputes, reach compromises, modify the rules when the situation changes (somebody joins or leaves). They learn how to cope with life. This is very sophisticated personal development in which children acquire competences for life. These skills are unique to human beings. No number of computer games, exercise cartoons, Facebook activity etc can compensate for childrens free play. No organised activities such as piano/swimming lessons, sports/dance clubs can give the same personal and social development. Parents who daily ferry their children from club to activity are clearly committed to their children, but these activities do not compensate for the lost benefits of play.
