Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: A Step-By-Step Guide

Centre for Cognitive Aging and Cognitive Epidemology

A systematic review answers a defined research question by collecting and summarising all empirical evidence that fits pre-specified eligibility criteria.

A meta-analysis is the use of statistical methods to summarise the results of these studies.

Meta-analysis

From Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta-analysis

.

In statistics, meta-analysis comprises statistical methods for contrasting and combining results from different studies in the hope of identifying patterns among study results, sources of disagreement among those results, or other interesting relationships that may come to light in the context of multiple studies.[1] Meta-analysis can be thought of as “conducting research about previous research.” In its simplest form, meta-analysis is done by identifying a common statistical measure that is shared between studies, such as effect size or p-value, and calculating a weighted average of that common measure. This weighting is usually related to the sample sizes of the individual studies, although it can also include other factors, such as study quality.

.

The motivation of a meta-analysis is to aggregate information in order to achieve a higher statistical power for the measure of interest, as opposed to a less precise measure derived from a single study. In performing a meta-analysis, an investigator must make choices many of which can affect its results, including deciding how to search for studies, selecting studies based on a set of objective criteria, dealing with incomplete data, analyzing the data, and accounting for or choosing not to account for publication bias. [2]

.

Meta-analyses are often, but not always, important components of a systematic review procedure. For instance, a meta-analysis may be conducted on several clinical trials of a medical treatment, in an effort to obtain a better understanding of how well the treatment works. Here it is convenient to follow the terminology used by the Cochrane Collaboration,[3] and use “meta-analysis” to refer to statistical methods of combining evidence, leaving other aspects of ‘research synthesis’ or ‘evidence synthesis’, such as combining information from qualitative studies, for the more general context of systematic reviews.

The Community Guide

http://www.thecommunityguide.org/about/methods.html

What is a systematic review?

A systematic review is a review of scientific studies on a specific topic. It uses a formal process to:

Identify all relevant studies

Assess their quality

Summarize the evidence

Why do a systematic review?

Systematic reviews help make sense of large bodies of scientific literature by applying the scientific process to:

Reduce bias in how conclusions are reached

Improve the power and precision of results

Summarize evidence about the effectiveness of particular approaches for addressing a public health problem

Analyze generalizability of findings

Identify knowledge gaps and need for additional research

GOP’s New Scheme to Save Trump’s Tax Plan Reveals the Scam at its Core

Amid the final push to pass the Senate tax plan, which is at a make-or-break moment today, Republicans have now hatched two separate schemes, each designed to win over a different bloc of undecided senators. But the two maneuvers could contradict each other and the contradiction would neatly reveal the big scam at the heart of this whole enterprise.

.

Several deficit-hawk senators, such as Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), are demanding that some kind of trigger be added to the bill, which would raise taxes later if the plans tax cuts end up adding to the deficit. The bill would boost the deficit by $1.4 trillion in the short term. Some Republicans have argued that the spectacular growth unleashed by the plan would offset that, but Corker and company (and many economists) are skeptical; hence the demand for a tax-hike trigger. As of now, how this trigger would work, and whose taxes would go up, are unspecified.

.

At the same time, Senate Republicans are currently looking at ways to make the bill more generous to owners of pass-through businesses, to win over holdouts Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Steve Daines of Montana. Research has shown that most pass-through income goes to the top 1 percent: As the New York Times put it, to win them over, Republicans are increasingly tilting their plan to benefit wealthy Americans.

.

But heres the rub of the matter: As one tax analyst tells me, if Republicans make the plan more generous to the wealthy by doing more for pass-throughs (to win over some senators), this would also add to the deficit (which should drive away the others). And this leads us right back to the con at the heart of this whole affair.

.

The center of the Senate GOP tax plan is a large permanent cut to the tax rate paid by corporations. These would themselves overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy, because the vast majority of their benefits would go to shareholders and capital. But Republicans face two challenges. The first is to sell this primarily as a middle-class tax cut, so voters accept it. They do this by front-loading a bunch of preferences for the middle class along with cuts to individual rates across the board. The second challenge is to do this while simultaneously making the case that the plan would not balloon the deficit, to hold on to deficit-hawk senators and because if it raises the deficit in the long term, procedurally it cant pass by simple majority with only Republican votes. Republicans address this problem by ending all the middle-class preferences and individual rate cuts after 2025.

.

But the problem is that the second imperative undermines the first. Because the middle-class benefits must be temporary to avoid busting the long-term deficit, analyses have found that in the long run, it would shower enormous long-term benefits on the rich while the benefits to the middle class fade away and taxes go up later for many less-fortunate earners. The whole point of back-loading the losses on to that latter group later is to prevent the permanent corporate tax cuts from ballooning the long-term deficit, allowing a huge permanent tax cut overwhelmingly benefiting the rich to pass with no Democrats.

How to Make Sense of the Daily Trump Circus

.

Its one of the central contradictions of the Trump regime.

.

With his reckless and ridiculous tweets and statements, Donald Trump is diminishing the presidency its moral stature, its integrity, its standing around the world. One of the first tasks for our next president will be to restore those standards.

.
Yet Trump is also expanding the power of the office by going around Congress and the courts, issuing one executive order after another and reversing actions by Barack Obama on civil rights, the environment, financial regulations, immigration and so much more. Trump seems obsessed with wiping out Obamas legacy, even joking, sort of, about overturning last Thanksgivings pardons of turkeys Tater and Tot.

.

Viewing what Trump does on these two levels is a good way to make sense of this White House and to not get distracted by the daily circus. Monday, the outrage was Trump again using Pocahontas to refer to Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. The White House denied it was a racial slur.

.

We also just saw this play out when Trump poured fuel on his stupid Twitter feud with LaVar Ball the self-promoting basketball dad whose ego may be even more inflated than Trumps and it dominated coverage on cable news.

.

At the same time, Trumps new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission unveiled plans to undo Obamas net neutrality rules. Critics say consumers including sports fans intrigued by the Trump-Ball spat will end up paying more for the highest-quality and fastest internet services.

.

Theres a reason why Politicos feature called 5 things Trump did this week while you werent looking is so on point.

.

While Trumps setbacks on major legislation in Congress health care and, maybe soon, tax cuts get a lot of attention, he is quietly changing policy and regulations through his cabinet secretaries and other appointees. At the moment, hes in a court battle to put his own director in charge so he can remake the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, one of the few reforms after the Wall Street meltdown to help working Americans.

.

And while Trump railed against Obamas executive orders during the campaign, he has issued nearly twice as many so far and is on the second fastest pace of any president in the last 50 years, behind only Dwight Eisenhower.

Databases with Content Regarding Computer Science and Information Science

This past Summer I launched a research guide for Computer and Information
Science. The first and only complete section of this guide is the list of
databases that provide sources related to this field based on a search of
terminology used in teaching this subject area. This list is very long as
I also include a substantial list of citations from about 70% of the
databases included as well as indication of the number of sources in each
database searched.  I suspect in some of these databases, there would be a
wealth of content about digital marketing that should be useful to any
involved with digital marketing.

If theres any time for excuses, its during the holidays when sweaters come out, socializing heats up and the overindulging begins.

.

With so much to do, it can be hard to imagine a way to squeeze in the American College of Sports Medicines recommended fitness guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate activity or 20 to 60 minutes of vigorous cardio three times a week, plus strength training and stretching. So many simply abandon their exercise routine until the new year, says Los Angeles-based trainer Mike Donavanik, making it harder on themselves in January.

.

They start out defeated, already shutting down the possibility of staying active and fit during the holidays, Donavanik said.

.

Research shows that half the weight you gain over the holidays takes until the summer months to come off if it comes off at all.

.

Rather than giving up and giving in to the Spanx, Donavanik advises his clients who have an existing fitness routine to compress their workouts into short but intense sessions that get your heart rate up and build strength.

.

if you can fit in 20 minutes [of circuits] three or four times a week, that will hold you over until January, Donavanik says, when you have more time and energy to tackle those fitness goals.

.

Here are some pro tips for getting the maximum fitness benefits in the shortest amount of time over the holidays:

.

If that hourlong cardio class doesnt seem likely given your to-do list, try squeezing in 15 to 20 minutes of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the treadmill or at the park, raising your heart rate to 80% of maximum in one running interval for three minutes, then lowering it to 60% in the following three-minute recovery period by walking or slowing to a light jog, says Walt Thompson, the American College of Sports Medicines president. Repeat the sprint-and-recover intervals three or four times each workout.

.

When you travel over the holidays, its hard to keep up with your strength routine. Donavanik recommends picking a handful of basic bodyweight-based strength exercises such as lunges, squats, pushups and plank-ups that can be done anywhere at your moms house or between stints on Amazon.com. Set a timer on your phone and crank out 15 reps of each, rest for the remainder of the minute and then switch to the next exercise.

Abstract: Physical activity lowers future cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk; however, few children and adolescents achieve the recommended minimum amount of daily activity. Accordingly, there is virtue in identifying the efficacy of small volumes of high-intensity exercise for health benefits in children and adolescents for the primary prevention of CVD risk. The purpose of this narrative review is to provide a novel overview of the available literature concerning high-intensity interval-exercise (HIIE) interventions in children and adolescents. Specifically, the following areas are addressed:

1) outlining the health benefits observed following a single bout of HIIE,

2) reviewing the role of HIIE training in the management of pediatric obesity, and

3) discussing the effectiveness of school-based HIIE training.

In total, 39 HIIE intervention studies were included in this review. Based upon the available data, a single bout of high-intensity exercise provides a potent stimulus for favorable, acute changes across a range of cardiometabolic outcomes that are often superior to a comparative bout of moderate-intensity exercise (14 studies reviewed). HIIE also promotes improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiometabolic health status in overweight and obese children and adolescents (10 studies reviewed) and when delivered in the school setting (15 studies reviewed). We thus conclude that high-intensity exercise is a feasible and potent method of improving a range of cardiometabolic outcomes in children and adolescents. However, further work is needed to optimize the delivery of HIIE interventions in terms of participant enjoyment and acceptability, to include a wider range of health outcomes, and to control for important confounding variables (eg, changes in diet and habitual physical activity). Finally, research into the application of HIIE training interventions to children and adolescents of different ages, sexes, pubertal status, and sociocultural backgrounds is required.

Keywords: vigorous physical activity, primary prevention, pediatric, cardiometabolic disease
