Teacher Disciplined over ‘Most Likely to Become a Terrorist’ Award

BBC News

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40064966

.

.

Teachers at a school in Texas are being disciplined after handing out an “award” declaring one student “most likely to become a terrorist”.
Lizeth Villanueva, 13, was handed the award by her teacher during a mock ceremony at the school near Houston.

.

A local education official described the incident as “a poor attempt at poking fun.”

.

But the student’s mother told a local news channel: “It doesn’t look like a joke to me.”

.

The fake certificate, signed by the teacher, was handed out the day after the terrorist attack at a concert in Manchester, England, which killed 22 people, including children.

.

Lizeth’s mother contacted Houston’s KPRC 2 channel about the mock ceremony, conducted with students in the advanced learning programme at Anthony Aguirre Junior High in the town of Channelview.

.

“It was not a joke,” Lizeth told KPRC 2. “I do not feel comfortable being in the same classroom with [the teacher].”

.

The Washington Post reports that other awards included “most likely to cry for every little thing” and “most likely to become homeless”, all of which were greeted with laughter from several teachers gathered in the room.

.

The school district released a statement apologising for “the insensitive and offensive fake mock awards that were given to students”.

Pregnant teenager banned from graduation ceremony

25 May 2017

BBC News

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40045802

.

.

A pregnant US teenager branded “immoral” by her school and barred from its graduation ceremony is to have her own event, organised by her parents.
Maddi Runkles, 18, who attends a small private Christian school in Maryland, has been told she is not welcome at the event, on 2 June, because she must be “accountable for her immorality”.

.

Instead, her parents have decided to organise a special party for their daughter the following day.

.

The decision by the board of governors of the Heritage Academy, in Hagerstown, has drawn criticism on social media from those who say the school is showing no Christian compassion to the teenager.

A Pregnant Teens Graduation Drama Reveals an Uncomfortable Divide Between Pro-Lifers and Social Conservatives

Maddi Runkles is an 18-year-old senior at Heritage Academy, a small, conservative Christian school in Hagerstown, Maryland. She is also pregnant and has admitted to breaking the pledge that all Heritage students sign, vowing to [protect] my body by abstaining from sexual immorality and from the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. As the New York Times reported a few days ago, the school is punishing her by forbidding her from walking on graduation day in June and removing her from her position on the student council.

.

Runkles story became national news this week because her family enlisted the help of the feisty anti-abortion group Students for Life. Her cause is compelling to pro-life groups because of one obvious fact: If she had quietly procured an abortion, she would be walking at graduation next month with the rest of her class. She made the courageous decision to choose life, and she definitely should not be shamed, Students for Lifes president, Kristan Hawkins, told the Times. There has got to be a way to treat a young woman who becomes pregnant in a graceful and loving way.

.

Since the Times reported on Runkles, her dispute with the school has been widely discussed in pro-life and Christian circles online. One site praised her for committing to raise her son instead of secretly killing him. On Tuesday, the schools administrator, David Hobbs, issued a statement in response to the hubbub. Maddi is being disciplined, not because shes pregnant, but because she was immoral, Hobbs wrote in a letter posted to the schools website. The school is pleased that she has chosen not to abort her son. However, her immorality is the original choice she made that began this situation.

.

Runkles is an ideal emblem for the pro-life cause. She has a 4.0 GPA, played on the Heritage soccer team, and describes herself as a a practicing born-again Christian. A few days after she learned she was pregnant in January, she found out she had been accepted to her dream school, the ultraconservative Bob Jones University. And she is fluent in the language and rituals of repentance: Rather than let Hobbs announce her pregnancy to the school, Runkles opted to make the public announcement herself. I wanted to confess what I did and ask for forgiveness from my school, she told Breitbart.

And by the way, we were furious about the past presidential election of a man whose presidency would eventually end in disgrace with his impeachment for obstruction of justice after firing the person running the investigation into him at the Department of Justice.

.

But heres what I want you to know. We got through that tumultuous time, and once again began to thrive as our society changed laws and opened the circle of opportunity and rights wider and wider for more Americans. We revved up the engines of innovation and imagination. We turned back a tide of intolerance and embraced inclusion. The we who did those things were more than those in power who wanted to change course. It was millions of ordinary citizens, especially young people, who voted, marched, and organized.

.

Now, of course today has some important differences. The advance of technology, the impact of the internet, our fragmented media landscape, make it easier than ever to splinter ourselves into echo chambers. We can shut out contrary voices, avoid ever questioning our basic assumptions. Extreme views are given powerful microphones. Leaders willing to exploit fear and skepticism have tools at their disposal that were unimaginable when I graduated.

.

And heres what that means to you, the Class of 2017. You are graduating at a time when there is a full-fledged assault on truth and reason. Just log on to social media for ten seconds. It will hit you right in the face. People denying science, concocting elaborate, hurtful conspiracy theories about child-abuse rings operating out of pizza parlors, drumming up rampant fear about undocumented immigrants, Muslims, minorities, the poor, turning neighbor against neighbor and sowing division at a time when we desperately need unity. Some are even denying things we see with our own eyes, like the size of crowds, and then defending themselves by talking about quote-unquote alternative facts.

.

But this is serious business. Look at the budget that was just proposed in Washington. It is an attack of unimaginable cruelty on the most vulnerable among us, the youngest, the oldest, the poorest, and hard-working people who need a little help to gain or hang on to a decent middle class life. It grossly under-funds public education, mental health, and efforts even to combat the opioid epidemic. And in reversing our commitment to fight climate change, it puts the future of our nation and our world at risk. And to top it off, it is shrouded in a trillion-dollar mathematical lie. Lets call it what it is. Its a con. They dont even try to hide it.

.

Why does all this matter? It matters because if our leaders lie about the problems we face, well never solve them. It matters because it undermines confidence in government as a whole, which in turn breeds more cynicism and anger. But it also matters because our country, like this College, was founded on the principles of the Enlightenmentin particular, the belief that people, you and I, possess the capacity for reason and critical thinking, and that free and open debate is the lifeblood of a democracy. Not only Wellesley, but the entire American university systemthe envy of the worldwas founded on those fundamental ideals. We should not abandon them; we should revere them. We should aspire to them every single day, in everything we do.

.

And theres something else. As the history majors among you here today know all too well, when people in power invent their own facts, and attack those who question them, it can mark the beginning of the end of a free society. That is not hyperbole. It is what authoritarian regimes throughout history have done. They attempt to control realitynot just our laws and rights and our budgets, but our thoughts and beliefs.

.

Right now, some of you might wonder, well why am I telling you all this? You dont own a cable news network. You dont control the Facebook algorithm. You arent a member of Congressyet. Because I believe with all my heart that the future of Americaindeed, the future of the worlddepends on brave, thoughtful people like you insisting on truth and integrity, right now, every day. You didnt create these circumstances, but you have the power to change them.

Uninsured Ranks Still to Grow by Tens of Millions under Latest House
Health-Care Bill, CBO Says

Health-care legislation adopted by House Republicans earlier this month would leave 23 million more Americans uninsured by 2026 than under current law, the Congressional Budget Office projected Wednesday  only a million fewer than the estimate for the Houses previous bill.

.

The nonpartisan agencys finding, which drew immediate fire from Democrats, patient advocates, health industry officials and some business groups, is likely to complicate Republicans push to pass a companion bill in the Senate.

.

The new score, which reflects last-minute revisions that Republicans made to win over several conservative lawmakers and a handful of moderates, calculates that the American Health Care Act would reduce the federal deficit by $119 billion between 2017 and 2026. That represents a smaller reduction than the $150 billion CBO estimated in late March, largely because House leaders provided more money in their final bill to offset costs for consumers with expensive medical conditions and included language that could translate to greater federal spending on health insurance subsidies.

.

As Republican senators quickly distanced themselves from the updated numbers, what became apparent is the difficult balancing act congressional leaders face as they seek to rewrite large portions of the Affordable Care Act. Some GOP senators are eager to soften portions of the House bill, including cuts to entitlement programs and provisions that would allow insurers in individual states to offer fewer benefits in their health plans or to charge consumers with costly medical conditions higher premiums.

.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who did not issue a statement in response to the new budget score, suggested in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday that he still harbored doubts over whether his party could muster enough votes to pass any kind of health-care bill this year.

.

I dont know how we get to 50 [votes] at the moment, he said, referring to a situation in which Vice President Pence would cast the deciding vote. But thats the goal.

.

To avoid a filibuster by Democrats, Senate Republicans plan to take the bill up under budget reconciliation rules  which only require a majority vote but mean the legislation cannot increase the federal deficit within a 10-year window. The Republicans have been working for weeks on their own health-care bill and emphasize that they do not intend to simply follow the Houses lead.

.

Exactly what the composition of [our legislation] is, Im not going to speculate about because it serves no purpose, McConnell told Reuters.

.

Some, like Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.), said the CBO score would have no impact on his chambers efforts to write its own bill.

UX of Stairs: When Simple Tasks Aren’t So Simple (Video)

“As a user experience professional, I work hard to consider the end

As Trump Unravels, So Do Fox News Ratings

In a development that has sparked murmurs throughout the cable news business, Fox News in recent weeks has regularly finished in last place among advertising-friendly viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, or demo viewers, as theyre known in the industry. (In terms of total viewers, Fox News does better, thanks to its large stable of viewers over the age of 54.)

.

For first time this century, they arent in first place, noted MSNBCs Joe Scarborough last week. In fact, for the first time this century, they are in third place. Added CNNs Brian Stelter, This is an extraordinary moment in the cable news race.

.

And yes, a lot of this is President Donald Trumps fault.

.

Ever since Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on May 9, which seemed to then unleash an unending stream of breaking-news bombshells that rattled White House windows day after day, Fox News has seen its mighty ratings prowess threatened by MSNBC and CNN.

.

Basically, the ongoing and ever-expanding list of scandals involving the Trump administration  many revolving around Russia  has depressed Fox News viewers while simultaneously spiking interest at CNN and MSNBC, driving Fox into the ratings basement.

.

Are we witnessing a sea change in cable news? Or is this simply an extended blip thats drawing back the curtain and revealing Fox News programming flaws  flaws that could be, at least in part, the result of endless personnel turmoil at the network for the last year.

.

Whether its permanent or temporary, the current ratings malaise certainly raises larger questions for Fox News as it confronts a key transition period and figures out how to cover the Trump administration. So far, its defend everything Trump does while complaining about liberal media bias strategy doesnt seem to be paying off.

.

Keep in mind, last year Bill OReilly and Megyn Kelly were posting blockbuster numbers at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. for Fox News. Today, theyre both gone and their replacement shows are struggling. Tucker Carlson Tonight is having trouble at 8 p.m., and The Fives move to 9 p.m. has been, by Fox News standards, a ratings disappointment.

.

Carlsons decline at 8 p.m. must be especially troubling for Fox News executives since its a valuable time slot the network absolutely dominated for more than a decade with OReilly at the helm.

Reporter Says He Was ‘Body Slammed’ by a Montana Republican

A Guardian reporter has accused Greg Gianforte, the GOP candidate for a hotly contested House seat, of assaulting him following a question about the American Health Care Act.

Ben Jacobs, a political reporter for The Guardian, said he was assaulted Wednesday afternoon by Greg Gianforte, a Republican candidate in the closely watched race for Montanas House seat, after asking the candidate a question regarding the Republican health-care plan.

.

According to Jacobss Twitter account, Gianforte body slammed him to the ground, breaking his glasses in the process:

.

.

The alleged assault took place at Gianfortes campaign headquarters in Bozeman, Montana. At the time that Jacobs endeavored to ask Gianforte a question, the candidate was in a side room with a local news crew, The Guardian reports. According to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Gianforte spoke with deputies from the Gallatin County Sheriffs Office following the incident, but left the scene without speaking to reporters.

.

The race for Montanas only House seat had already drawn national attention. Both Democrats and Republicans view the contest to fill the seat vacated by Ryan Zinke, who left to become the Trump administrations interior secretary, as a potential bellwether for the upcoming 2018 midterm elections and a gauge of the presidents popularity. Despite being a solid-red district that Trump won by double digits, Democrats believe their nominee, Rob Quist, has the potential to pull off an upset.

.

Later in the evening, a crew from Fox News published an article saying they, too, witnessed Gianforte attack Jacobs. While their account was consistent with that of Levinson and Jacobs, it also claimed that Gianforte punched Jacobs and grabbed his neck:

.

Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him. Faith, Keith, and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the man, as he moved on top the reporter and began yelling something to the effect of, Im sick and tired of this!

.

Jacobs scrambled to his knees and said something about his glasses being broken. He asked Faith, Keith, and myself for our names. In shock, we did not answer. He then said he wanted the police called and went to leave. Gianforte looked at the three of us and repeatedly apologized. At that point, I told him and [Shane Scanlon], who was now present, that we needed a moment. The men then left.
