To Fight Child Obesity –
Let Children Play Outdoors More with Their Friends

Instead of shrinking pizzas and burgers, it is vital to get children to play outside unsupervised  and not just for the exercise

Obesity is an environmental issue not a disease. Children growing up in the 1950s and 1960s were not obese. Virtually all people over 60 (and many younger) remember walking to infant school without an adult. Most travelled unaccompanied from the age of five after being taken for a couple of weeks by a parent. Children would also be able to run around in their own street and go on errands at this age. In other words, they had daily healthy exercise at no cost in money or time to the government and their parents.

.

snip

.

It is known from zoos that if mammals cannot run around outside their houses they get obese and display repetitive behaviour and poor mental health. Crucially, if their environment is improved  by enabling them to run around more freely  their health improves.

.

snip

.

Our children are being offered solutions that would not be acceptable for mammals in zoos. If zoo experts said that the main solution to obesity caused by being penned in was to replace some of the mammals food with smaller portions of calorie-free synthetic food, there would be an outcry from animal lovers. Yet this is what PHE is doing.

.

The NHS offers tailored, personalised help to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes, including education on healthy eating and lifestyle, help to lose weight and bespoke physical exercise programmes  an expensive solution, which will reach relatively few people and divert resources from areas where treatment is needed.

.

Experts also constantly blame parents for not taking their children to the park or countryside more often. But most parents never did regularly take their children out to play. They didnt have to  their children played happily in the street.

.

It is vital that children do play outdoors unsupervised, and not just for the exercise. In any game, children have to agree the rules for themselves, they have to play fairly (or the fun stops), they settle disputes, reach compromises, modify the rules when the situation changes (somebody joins or leaves). They learn how to cope with life. This is very sophisticated personal development in which children acquire competences for life. These skills are unique to human beings. No number of computer games, exercise cartoons, Facebook activity etc can compensate for childrens free play. No organised activities such as piano/swimming lessons, sports/dance clubs can give the same personal and social development. Parents who daily ferry their children from club to activity are clearly committed to their children, but these activities do not compensate for the lost benefits of play.

Trump Drives His Few Political Friends Away

By Stephen Collinson, CNN

(CNN)Donald Trump was never part of the Washington in-crowd.
Yet the President is fast losing the few friends he did have in the capital, following a wild period in which he offered cover to white supremacists and ignited a war of words with North Korea, leaving GOP allies in the crossfire.

.

Thursday brought rebukes from two prominent Republican senators and a member of the highly influential Murdoch family, staunch supporters of the President.

.

Bob Corker, one of the most respected Senate Republicans, who has tried to keep open channels to the White House and coax Trump toward a more conventional foreign policy, unloaded on him in a spectacular manner.
The chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee is not prone to outspoken outbursts and thinks carefully before delivering his analysis. So his critique that the President has not shown sufficient stability, competence or understanding of the character of the country that he leads was devastating.

.

RELATED: Republican senators are striking back in Trump’s public war of words

.

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott was another Trump ally who had been wrestling with a painful political and moral dilemma. But he also broke ranks Thursday, saying he could not defend the “indefensible” in the wake of Trump’s comments about the alt-right rallies in Charlottesville.
Scott, the only black Republican senator, suggested that Trump had squandered the moral authority of his office — a critical commodity vital in binding the nation together in a time of crisis or national tragedy that also helps to sustain the power of any presidency.

.

Another sign of Trump’s growing isolation came Thursday night. James Murdoch, the 21st Century Fox CEO and son of Rupert Murdoch, who is one of Trump’s close informal advisers, wrote a withering email denouncing the President’s reaction to the White Supremacist rally and the violence it sparked.

.

“I can’t even believe I have to write this: standing up to Nazis is essential; there are no good Nazis,” Murdoch wrote. “Or Klansmen, or terrorists. Democrats, Republicans, and others must all agree on this, and it compromises nothing for them to do so.”

.

Their sharp words were a clear indication of the damage that Trump inflicted on himself with his unchained news conference Tuesday, in which he drew an equivalence between racists and counterprotestors in Charlottesville and offered a shocking glimpse of his inner beliefs and temperament.

.

The defections of the two senators followed a stampede away from Trump by CEOs who served on White House advisory councils, amid fears their company brands could be tarnished by association with the President.

.

It all left Trump increasingly alone and even more reliant on his ever-loyal core voters, who sustain him in times of self-inflicted controversy and public outrage, but who may not represent a sufficiently broad base on which to build a successful presidency.

.

snip

.

Congressional tensions have a political price

.

The rebukes by Corker and Scott also pointed to a looming political problem that Trump has only exacerbated by his recent behavior.
The President was already lacking friends in the Senate, a reality that became clear in his narrowly failed push to repeal and replace Obamacare that left little doubt that few senators fear or revere him.

.

If he is to enact his ambitious political agenda that includes items such as tax reform and a massive infrastructure program — or to influence Senate Republican legislation on these issues — he will need to mend his toxic relations with top GOP members of the chamber, not least his feud with Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell.

Reply to “Building Accessible Single Page Apps”

By Dennis Lembrée.

“For dynamic screen changes in an SPA, I highly recommend setting
focus to the region with new content, preferably to a top-level
heading within the new content. An ARIA live region will read new
content to a screen reader user but the keyboard focus will remain in
a illogical location on the screen, and very often focus will be lost
entirely since content is removed. Reading out all the new content may
also be overwhelming for the user.”

Australian Bodybuilder with Rare Disorder Dies Eating High-Protein Diet

By Susan Scutti

.

.

Bodybuilder Meegan Hefford, 25, died in June from a rare genetic disorder that prevented her body from properly metabolizing her high-protein diet.

.

(CNN)Meegan Hefford, a 25-year-old bodybuilder, was found unconscious on June 19 in her Mandurah, Western Australia, apartment, according to CNN affiliate Australia News 7. Days later, Hefford was pronounced dead. Only after her death did her family learn that Hefford, the mother of a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, had a rare genetic disorder that prevented her body from properly metabolizing her high-protein diet.
Urea cycle disorder, which causes a deficiency of one enzyme in the urea cycle, stops the body from breaking down protein, according to the nonprofit National Urea Cycle Disorders Foundation. Normally, the body can remove nitrogen, a waste product of protein metabolism, from the blood. However, a urea cycle disorder would prohibit this. Therefore, nitrogen, in the form of toxic ammonia, would accumulate in the blood and eventually reach the brain, where it can cause irreversible damage, coma and death.
“The enzyme deficiency can be mild enough so that the person is able to detoxify ammonia adequately — until there’s a trigger,” said Cynthia Le Mons, executive director of the foundation. The trigger could be a viral illness, stress or a high-protein diet, she added.

.

“There was just no way of knowing she had it because they don’t routinely test for it,” said Michelle White, Hefford’s mother and a resident of Perth. “She started to feel unwell, and she collapsed.”
White blames protein shakes for her daughter’s death.
‘Nuanced symptoms’

.

Since 2014, Hefford, who worked at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and studied paramedicine, had been competing as a bodybuilder.
It was only after Hefford’s death that White discovered containers of protein supplements in her daughter’s kitchen, along with a strict food plan. White understood then that her daughter, who had been preparing for another bodybuilding competition, had also been consuming an unbalanced diet.

.

Hefford was eating “way too much protein,” said White, which triggered her daughter’s unknown urea cycle condition. (For most healthy people, a high-protein diet, when followed for a short time, generally isn’t harmful, according to the Mayo Clinic.) Hefford’s diet included protein-rich foods, such as lean meat and egg white, in addition to protein shakes and supplements, her mother said.

.

“There’s medical advice on the back of all the supplements to seek out a doctor, but how many young people actually do?” White asked.

.

snip

.

The Australian Medical Association says there’s no real health benefit to such supplements. And, while they may not be necessary for most people, they’re not dangerous to most, either.
Treatment

.

The estimated incidence of urea cycle disorders is 1 in 8,500 births. Since many cases remain undiagnosed, the exact incidence is unknown and believed to be underestimated.

Teaching Social Psychology Newsletter

Vol. 16, No. 11

August 15, 2017

______________________________________________________________

the e-mail newsletter accompanying the
Resources for the Teaching of Social Psychology website at
http://jfmueller.faculty.noctrl.edu/crow

______________________________________________________________

Welcome, new subscribers!  I distribute 11 issues a year, excluding July, so this may be your first issue.  All of the
resources listed below will eventually be added to the Resources for the Teaching of Social Psychology website linked above.
There you can find thousands of annotated links to activities and exercises, class assignments, multimedia, topic resources
and more for the teaching of social psychology and related courses.  (If you haven’t recently, you might want to take a look
at what is available at the Resources website.  A nudge!)  As always, if you ever come across any resources you would like
to share please pass them along.  Enjoy!

(Editor’s Note:  After adding the items below, I realize I still have so many resources left that I will be sending out a
second issue later in August.  A bonus issue!  Oh, and I now have hummingbirds outside my office window!)

Activities and Exercises

Group Influence: Group polarization

http://teachpsych.org/resources/Pictures/H.I.T.blog/David%20Myers%20-%20Group%20polarization.pdf

Subscriber David Myers share this activity he has used in his social psychology classes.

Social Judgment: Pseudopsychic demonstrations

http://teachpsych.org/resources/Pictures/H.I.T.blog/David%20Myers%20-%20Pseudopsychic%20demonstrations.pdf

Another good set of classroom demos from David Myers

The Self: Adaptation-level phenomenon

https://community.macmillan.com/community/the-psychology-community/blog/2017/07/09/examples-of-adaptation-level-phenomenon-
from-louis-c-k

Comedian Louis C. K. provides some examples, and then a possible activity with students is described.

Articles

Attitudes & Behavior/Helping: “Free will beliefs predict attitudes toward unethical behavior and criminal
punishment”

http://jfmueller.faculty.noctrl.edu/crow/vohs.pdf

Subscriber Kathleen Vohs graciously shared this interesting article.

Helping: Too hot to help

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ejsp.2242/epdf

This research suggests that uncomfortably warm conditions can lead to reduced helping.

The Self: “The true self: A psychological concept distinct from the self

https://campuspress.yale.edu/joshuaknobe/files/2016/11/TrueSelfReview-15aciac.pdf

Examples

Gender & Culture: Objectification

http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-40851224

“Chinese restaurant offers bra size discounts.”

Social Judgment: Confirmation bias

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/outback-steakhouse-not-satanic-cult_us_597cc5bde4b0da64e8798095?wif&ncid=inbl
nkushpmg00000009

This bizarre story around Outback Steakhouse locations is a good example of confirmation bias and our natural
search for patterns.

Topic Resources

Aggression:  Many mass killers and terrorists have a history of domestic violence

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/james-alex-fields-domestic-violence_us_599221bde4b08a247276ba28?ncid=inblnkushpmg000000
09

As does the alleged perpetrator at the Charlottesville episode

Aggression: “The 5 W’s of threat appraisal”

http://psychlearningcurve.org/threat-appraisals/

Advice for school personnel and parents if you hear a student make a threat

Aggression: Can words be violence?

https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/07/why-its-a-bad-idea-to-tell-students-words-are-violence/533970/

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/14/opinion/sunday/when-is-speech-violence.html?_r=0

An interesting discussion of the topic — what do your students think?  The second link is to the original
article to which the first author responds.

Attitudes & Behavior:  Majority of Republicans believe colleges are bad for U.S.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/republicans-college-poll_us_59639fe2e4b0d5b458ec4481

This change in belief has been quite rapid recently.  What might have led to such a change?

Conformity/Persuasion: When and where do nudges work?

https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-07-19/some-countries-like-nudges-more-than-others

A “nudge” is an intervention “that preserves freedom of choice, but steers people in a particular direction.”

Group Influence: “Being in a group makes us less likely to fact-check”

https://hbr.org/2017/08/research-being-in-a-group-makes-us-less-likely-to-fact-check?

Helping: “Endorsing for others what we oppose for ourselves”

http://behavioralscientist.org/paradox-helping-endorsing-others-oppose/

“People who receive help prefer agentic aid– they want to choose…yet people who give help prefer it to be
paternalistic.”

Prejudice: Heavier Asian-Americans are seen as more Americans

https://qz.com/1043643/your-weight-can-affect-how-american-you-look/

Apparently since the stereotypes are that Asians are thin and Americans are heavy then heavy Asian-Americans
must be more American!

Prejudice: Wealthy communities “seceding” from school districts

https://edbuild.org/content/fractured/fractured-full-report.pdf

Apparently for racial reasons in many cases, in this newer phenomenon

Prejudice: “Redlining never went away”

https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-07-19/redlining-never-went-away

“New research shows that discriminatory lending holds down housing values, hurting black wealth accumulation.”

Prejudice: Germany votes to legalize same-sex marriage

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/germany-same-sex-marriage_us_5953cd3ae4b0da2c73205644?ncid=inblnkushpmg00000009

Prejudice: Reducing racial bias

https://www.vox.com/identities/2016/11/15/13595508/racism-trump-research-study

A good discussion of strategies that work and ones that don’t

Prejudice/Social Judgment:  Why do we have biases?

http://behavioralscientist.org/overcoming-biases-come-us/

This essay provides a nice discussion of two common motives: self-protection and efficiency.

Social Judgment: “Does empathy and warmth make a physician seem more competent?”

https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/does-empathy-and-warmth-make-a-physician-seem-more-competent/

Apparently, yes

Social Judgment/The Self: Those who think they are highly intuitive really aren’t

http://wtop.com/education/2017/07/intuition-study-research/

Surprising findings to those who think they are intuitive, but very unsurprising to social psychologists

The Self: “Would you rather cut off your hand or be known as a Nazi?”

https://www.seeker.com/culture/behavior/reputation-study-asks-would-you-rather-cut-off-your-hand-or-be-known-as-a-nazi

This very interesting and timely research is all about the importance of reputation.  According to the studies,
many would rather cut off their hand, perhaps even more so after last week’s events.

The Self: “Watching children learn to lie”

https://theconversation.com/watching-children-learn-how-to-lie-80299

Within this study researchers could observe 3-year-olds discover how to lie.  Immediately after the study two of
the kids declared themselves candidates for office, and one applied for graduate work in social psychology.

Technology in Teaching

Video

Aggression: “School bully” (2:05)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUvFeyGxaaU

Amusing Key and Peele video exploring some of the motivations of bullies

Gender & Culture: Women on Capitol Hil cannot go sleeveless (1:28)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/women-dress-code-capitol-hill_us_59600432e4b0d5b458ea9857?nup&ncid=inblnkushpm
g00000009

Prejudice: A documentary of Charlottesville, VA (22:05)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/charlottesville-vice-documentary_us_59930983e4b09071f69cc8f6?ncid=inblnkushpmg
00000009

Yes, already.  This is a powerful, on-the-ground look at the events and people of those hours. from HBO’s Vice News
Tonight.  Lots of opportunity for discussion around this video.

Prejudice:  “Don’t be a sucker” (17:21)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dont-be-a-sucker-government-fascism-film_us_599127a8e4b09071f69aa4ee?ncid=inbl
nkushpmg00000009

This 1943 U.S. government film about fascism recently went viral after what happened in Charlottesville, VA.

Prejudice: Being gay then and now (11:13)

https://community.macmillan.com/community/the-psychology-community/blog/2017/07/16/being-gay-then-and-now-a-conver
sation

A conversation between a 13-year-old boy and a 76-year-old man about being gay

Prejudice: The Talk (2:09)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdV2f4jH5YQ

A powerful commercial from Proctor & Gamble about “the talk” African-American parents give to their children
