Fort McMurray Area Update May 17, 2016 9 pm Update on the Horse River Wildfire.
Posted on Tue, May 17, 2016 : Alberta Agriculture and Forestry

Update on the Horse River Wildfire (MWF-009) as of 8:00 pm

The wildfire hazard continues to be EXTREME in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Winds today were mainly out of the west, pushing the fire to the southwest edge
of Suncor on the west side of highway 63 and 26 Kilometres south of Fort MacKay.
Smoky conditions have made it challenging to view the southeast portion.
It has made its way to the west side of Gordon Lake and to the southwest corner
of Birch Lake.

Wednesday’s forecast indicates another active day of burning with milder winds
and reduced spread. Some precipitation is expected for Thursday and Friday.

2016 Fort McMurray Wildfire FROM Wikipedia

On May 1, 2016, a wildfire began southwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada.
On May 3, it swept through the community, destroying approximately 2,400 homes
and buildings and forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Albertan history.
As of May 17, it continues to spread across northern Alberta, consuming forested
areas and impacting Athabasca oil sands operations. It may become the costliest
disaster in Canadian history.

restoration efforts.

FMPSD Mourns Composite Student

http://comp.fmpsdschools.ca/view.php?action=object&id=18475&stream=Homepage%20News

Fort McMurray Public School District family is in mourning. We lost Emily Ryan,
our Fort McMurray Composite High School grade nine student who passed away
in the Hwy 881 crash yesterday.

“Emily Ryan, one of the triplets, died at the scene. She was a vibrant, engaging
member of our student body,” said Kevin Bergen, Principal,
Fort McMurray Composite High School.

“We are shocked, and saddened. Our prayers and thoughts are with Emily’s family
as they deal with this trying situation,” said Doug Nicholls, Superintendent, FMPSD.

Changes to Diet, Physical Activity, Behaviour
May Reduce Obesity in Children, Adolescents

Date: June 22, 2017
Source: Wiley

Summary:

Making changes to diet, physical activity and behavior may reduce obesity in children and adolescents, suggests a new report.

Science Daily

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/06/170622083018.htm

.

.

Latest health evidence shows that making changes to diet, physical activity and behaviour may reduce obesity in children and adolescents.

.

Two Cochrane Reviews published today are the last in a series of related systematic reviews summarizing evidence on the effects of different interventions for treating obesity and overweight in childhood and adolescence.

.

The reviews summarize the results of 114 studies which involved over 13,000 children and young people. They show that a combination of diet, physical activity and behavioural change interventions may reduce weight in children aged six to 11 years and in adolescents aged 12 to 17, but there are limitations in the studies and variation in the results.

.

Childhood and adolescent obesity is one of the leading global public health concerns. Rapid weight gain in children as young as six years old has increased globally, and has significant mental and physical health consequences such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, sleep problems and low self-esteem. Obesity in childhood and adolescence can persist into adulthood, increasing the risk of poor health in later life.

.

Both these latest Cochrane Reviews will inform ongoing work by the World Health Organization. The two reviews look at the effects of diet, physical activity and behavioural interventions in treating children with overweight or obesity from six years old to early adulthood. They are the last two reviews in a series of six that covers surgery, drug therapy, interventions targeting parents only, and lifestyle interventions for children of pre-school age.

.

The childhood review looks at evidence from 70 studies conducted in over 8,000 six to 11 year olds from Europe, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Malaysia. Most studies compared behaviour-changing interventions with no treatment or usual care. The majority of trials (65/70) involved both the child and their parents or caregivers.

  • DATABASES: Stanford’s Copyright Renewal Database.

“Welcome to the initial release of Stanford’s Copyright Renewal Database. This database makes searchable the copyright renewal records received by the US Copyright Office between 1950 and 1992 for books published in the US between 1923 and 1963. Note that the database includes ONLY US Class A (book) renewals.

The period from 1923-1963 is of special interest for US copyrights, as works published after January 1, 1964 had their copyrights automatically renewed by statute, and works published before 1923 have generally fallen into the public domain. Between those dates, a renewal registration was required to prevent the expiration of copyright, however determining whether a work’s registration has been renewed is a challenge. Renewals received by the Copyright Office after 1977 are searchable in an online database, but renewals received between 1950 and 1977 were announced and distributed only in a semi-annual print publication. The Copyright Office does not have a machine-searchable source for this renewal information, and the only public access is through the card catalog in their DC offices.

In order to make these renewal records more accessible, Stanford has created this searchable database. Building on the work done by Project Gutenberg to transcribe the 1950-1977 renewals, and on early conversion efforts by Michael Lesk, we have converted the published renewal announcements to machine-readable form, and combined them with the renewals for later years made available on the Copyright Office’s website. Note that this database covers only renewals, not original registrations, and is limited to books (Class A registrations) published in the US. Note that the Catalog of Copyright Entries, and therefore this database, does not include entries for assignments, and so cannot be used for searches involving the ownership of rights. Please also note that copyrights restored under Section 104(a) of the copyright act are not represented in this database.

Stanford has performed two rounds of testing in order to assess the accuracy of this database. In each round, we pulled a minimum of 500 book titles published in the US between 1923 and 1963 from the Stanford library catalog. The works were checked manually in the CCE, and, in the first round, a subset of 100 records was also sent to the Copyright Office to be checked by their in-house staff. Each of these items was then separately searched by project staff in the Copyright Renewals Database. In each round, the error rate for the database was found to be less than 1%, although in practice there is significant opportunity for user error or other problems in searching. Details of these issues can be found in Stanford’s final report to Hewlett on the project ( PDF), and in the two search results sets ( Search Set #1, Search Set #2).

The full data set for the Copyright Renewals Database is available for download here. Stanford welcomes reuse of the data in other systems and search tools.”

U.S. Copyright Office – Licensing

http://www.copyright.gov/licensing/

Licensing Division

The Licensing Division is responsible for helping to administer the various statutory
licenses and similar provisions, including: secondary transmissions of radio and television
programs by cable and satellite systems; making and distributing phonorecords of
nondramatic musical works; and importing, manufacturing, and distributing digital
audio recording devices or media.

In general the division deducts its full operating costs from the royalty fees collected
and invests the balance in interest-bearing securities with the U.S. Treasury for later
distribution to copyright owners (see Report of Receipts). The division also collects
filing fees to cover part of the costs in administering the cable and satellite licenses.
For further information read Circular 75, The Licensing Division of the Copyright Office.

Organization of the Division

The Examining Section examines licensing documents submitted for a statutory or compulsory
license to determine that they meet the requirements under the statute and Copyright Office
regulations, including correct computations of the filing and royalty fees. A licensing examiner
will notify a licensee to correct errors or omissions on a document before final processing by
the Copyright Office.

The Fiscal Section performs all accounting, budgeting, and investing functions of the division
in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Financial Officer of the Library of Congress and
the U. S. Treasury. This section is also responsible for the ascertainment of funds available for
distribution by Copyright Royalty Judges.

The Information Section provides information about the compulsory and statutory licenses,
maintains all the division’s official licensing records, and performs reference searches of
licensing documents for the public and members of Congress. This section is also responsible
for examining licensing documents submitted for a statutory or compulsory license to determine
that they meet the requirements under the statute and Copyright Office regulations, including
the correct computation of the filing and royalty fees.

Database of Literary Copyright

Information Available To Researchers

http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/press/releases/2007/fobfile.html

AUSTIN, Texas—The University of Texas at Austin’s Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center
and the Reading University Library have created Firms Out of Business (FOB), an online database
containing the names and addresses of copyright holders or contact persons for out-of-business
printing and publishing firms, magazines, literary agencies and similar organizations that have
archives housed in libraries and archives
in North America and the United Kingdom.

FOB can be accessed at

http://www.fob-file.com

FOB is a companion project to the Writers, Artists and Their Copyright Holders (WATCH),
an online database containing the names and addresses of copyright holders or contact
persons for authors and artists. The WATCH file is accessible at

http://www.watch-file.com

The objective of both projects is to provide information to scholars and researchers
about whom to contact for permission to publish text and images that have copyright protection.

Righthaven

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Righthaven LLC was a copyright holding company founded in early 2010, which entered
agreements from its partner newspapers after finding that their content had been copied
to online sites without permission, in order to engage in litigation against the site owners
for copyright infringement. The lawsuits were heavily criticized by commentators, who
describe the activity as copyright trolling[1][2] and the company as a “lawsuit factory”.

Getty Images

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getty_Images

.

Getty Images, Inc. is a stock photo agency, based in Seattle, Washington, USA. It is a supplier of stock
images for business and consumers with an archive of 80 million still images and illustrations and more
than 50,000 hours of stock film footage. It targets three markets-creative professionals (advertising and
graphic design), the media (print and online publishing), and corporate (in-house design, marketing and
communication departments).

.

Getty has distribution offices around the world and capitalizes on the Internet and CD-ROM collections
for distribution. As Getty has acquired other older photo agencies and archives, it has digitised their
collections, enabling online distribution. Getty Images now operates a large commercial website which
allows clients to search and browse for images, purchase usage rights and download images. Costs of
images vary according to the chosen resolution and type of rights associated with each

image. The company also offers custom photo services for corporate clients.

Controversial practices to enforce copyright

.

Getty Images has caused controversy for its aggressive pursuit of

copyright enforcement on behalf of its photographers. Rather than pursue a policy
of sending out “cease and desist” notices, Getty typically mails out a demand letter
claiming substantial sums of damages to owners of websites which it believes are using
their images in infringement of their photographers’ copyright.[14] Getty commonly
tries to intimidate website

owners by sending collection agents, even though a demand letter cannot create a debt.
One photographer noted: “courts don’t like to be used as a means of extortion.”[14]
In one case, Getty sent a church in Lichfield, Staffordshire, a 6,000 bill for photographs
used on its website, apparently placed there by a church volunteer.[14] In this case,
the church offered to pay Getty what it thought was a reasonable amount.
The diocese’s communications director said, “Getty was not playing ball or

following the normal litigation or dispute resolution procedures and [I advised the church]
to ignore them. We don’t deal with bullies; we deal with legal threats appropriately. I told
