We should be encouraging people to take more exercise and improve their
diet rather than spending as much as we do on bariatric surgery to tackle
obesity and cut diabetes risk, MPs have recommended. The Health Select
Committee also called in its latest report for more emphasis on the
benefits to health of physical activity in itself, rather than viewing it
simply as a means of controlling weight. The Committee said it was
inexplicable and unacceptable for the NHS to now be spending more money on
bariatric surgery than is spent on intensive lifestyle intervention
programmes that were long ago proven to cut rates of diabetes and obesity.

.

The Inquiry into the impact of physical activity and diet on health heard
that although diet, obesity and physical activity all have important
impacts on health, there has been for too long a view that the only
benefit of physical activity is in terms of tackling obesity. The report
concluded: A core message from this inquiry is the compelling evidence
that physical activity in its own right has huge health benefits totally
independent of a persons weight. The importance of this regardless of
weight, age, gender or other factors needs to be clearly communicated.

.

MPs insisted that interventions focused on encouraging individuals to
change their behaviour with regard to diet and physical activity must be
underpinned by broader, population-level measures because, although both
are important, the advantage of population-level interventions is that
they have an impact on far greater numbers than could ever benefit from
individual interventions.

The co-pilot who crashed Germanwings Flight 4U9525 into the French Alps,
killing all 150 people on board, was rocked by a deep personal crisis
following relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a German
media report.

.

.

Lufthansa, the parent company of Germanwings, has confirmed that Lubitz
took a break from flying six years ago, however he later passed all
psychological and physical tests and was deemed “100 per cent fit to fly”.

.

Friends said Lubitz suffered a breakdown six years ago, described by one
as a “burnout”, but he had recovered and otherwise appeared to be
incredibly normal.

Police investigators are reportedly looking into a “personal life crisis”
that Lubitz was suffering, possibly related to relationship problems that
he had been “emotionally struggling” with, according to report in
Germany’s biggest-selling daily newspaper, Bild Zeitung.

.

.

He underwent psychiatric treatment for 18 months and repeatedly failed to
advance to higher levels in his pilot training because of depression, even
though he had successfully completed the course.

The Lubitz family’s large detached home, set on a plateau on one of the
hills surrounding Montabaur, was last night being treated as a crime
scene.

.

On Thursday afternoon, groups of plainclothes police officers began
carrying out a forensic search of the house. They were also thought to be
searching a flat that Lubitz rented in Dusseldorf, 135 kilometres to the
north.

.

“We are conducting a search of the parents’ home,” Ralf Herrenbruck, the
city’s chief prosecutor, told The Wall Street Journal. “All investigative
measures are now under way.”

Montabaur, Germany: Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz was silent as Germanwings
Flight 9525 from Barcelona to Dusseldorf descended for eight minutes
before crashing in the French Alps on Tuesday, authorities said. Lubitz,
identified by a French prosecutor as the co-pilot of the Airbus A320,
appeared to want to “destroy the plane” in the deadly Alpine crash that
killed 150 people.

.

Marseille Public Prosecutor Brice Robin told reporters that there was
“absolute silence in the cockpit,” which the pilot had exited, as the
plane descended. The cockpit voice recorder indicates that the pilot was
locked out of the cockpit while Lubitz remained inside. “This action can
only be done deliberately,” Robin added.

.

“The theory of a deliberate crash is plausible,” the German transport
minister said in a press conference after Robin’s announcement.

.

German authorities are expected to release information about Lubitz later
this week, the AFP reported, but details are beginning to emerge about the
pilot.

Digne-les-Bains: The 27-year-old German co-pilot of Germanwings Flight
4U9525 appears to have deliberately crashed the plane, French prosecutors
have said.

.

However, they are currently not calling the crash a terrorist act, nor a
suicide.

.

The co-pilot, identified as Andreas Lubitz, repeatedly turned a dial to
override the plane’s autopilot, sending it in a steep descent into the
Alps, after the plane’s captain had left the cockpit to go to the toilet.

.

The last eight minutes of the recovered cockpit flight recorder revealed
the man’s steady, measured breathing as he ignored queries from flight
control, an altitude alarm from the plane’s dashboard, and finally the
desperate shouts of the captain outside.

.

At the very end of the recording, the screams of passengers can be heard,
just before the plane hits the mountain.

.

snip

.

After 9/11, international regulations require that someone inside the
cockpit must manually unlock the armoured cockpit door, on a request from
outside.

.

snip

.

One hundred and fifty people died in the crash, including a mother and son
from Victoria, and a group of schoolchildren from Germany.

.

snip

.

Two plane-loads around 200 – of the victims’ relatives have arrived in
the region, and the families have been told the latest news.

.

“They are in a state of shock,” Mr Robin said. “They have had difficulty
coming to terms with the reality they have asked a lot of questions.”

.

They are being taken to a chapel near Seyne that has been set up for them
to lay flowers and pray for their lost relatives.

.

They will also provide DNA to help with the identification process,
however they will not be able to leave with their loved ones’ remains
until the whole process is finished, which could take weeks.

Germanwings plane crash: Bereaved families of Flight 4U9525 passengers

The town of Le Vernet, where the memorial service took place, is a tiny
village of just 123 people but now finds itself the closest human
connection to an international tragedy.

.

The locals have offered their homes to the families of the victims, should
they want to stay. The deputy mayor guided rescuers into the mountains in
the hours following the crash. Mayor Francis Balique, according to French
law, must sign 150 death certificates in coming days in a town where
there are one or two deaths a year, at most.

.

Due to its proximity to the crash site, the town was chosen as the most
appropriate site for the ‘farewell ceremony’ on Thursday afternoon, where
more than 200 of the family members gathered, one by one entering the
small chapel for a moment of contemplation. French media reported that
inside the chapel there was “flowers and silence”.

Prosecutor: Germanwings A320 Crash Was ‘Deliberate’

The Marseille prosecutor, Brice Robin, said at a press conference that the
copilot “refused to open” the cockpit door after the captain left the
flight deck and that he “activated the button that commands the loss of
altitude.”

.

Robin later said the copilot “manually” commanded the descent by entering
it into the “flight monitoring computer.” It wasn’t clear whether this
information was being based on anything gleaned from the flight data
recorder or whether the data recorder’s memory has even been recovered.
Also unclear is whether the copilot changed the A320’s power setting.
Preliminary radar data shows the airplane slowed slightly during the
descent, and Mode S transponder inerrogations appear to show the flight
control computer changing from 38,000 feet to essentially zero feet within
seconds of the initiation of the descent.

.

The prosecutor said the copilot can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder
breathing all the way to moment of impact, suggesting that he was
“conscious” and that the crash was premeditated. Again, the prosecutor
offered no additional information on how investigators reached these
conclusions.

.

.

Since the Ebola outbreak in West Africa was officially declared on 22
March in Guinea, it has claimed more than 9,100 lives in the region. The
outbreak is the largest ever, and is currently affecting three
countries in West Africa: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Outbreaks in
Mali, Nigeria and Senegal have been declared over. A separate outbreak in
DRC has also ended.

.

Following the downward trend of new cases reported in Medecins Sans
Fronties

.

(MSF) Ebola management centres across the three affected countries during
the first weeks of 2015, between week 5 and week 6 the number of new cases
has seen a slight increase (with 19 confirmed admissions on week 6.
Surveillance remains weak: the World Health Organization reported that
during the last week only about 15% of new cases in Guinea is from known
Ebola contacts, while in Sierra Leone the available data is limited
(according to WHO, on week 3 21% of new cases were from known contacts).
There is almost no information sharing for tracing Ebola contacts between
the three most-affected countries. Since a single new case is enough to
reignite an outbreak, the level of vigilance should remain high in order
not to jeopardise the progress made in stemming the epidemic.

.

What MSF is doing

.

MSFs West Africa Ebola response started in March 2014 and includes
activities in Guinea, Liberia, Mali and Sierra Leone. MSF currently
employs 325 international and around 4150 national locally hired staff
in the region. The organisation operates eight Ebola case management
centres (CMCs), providing approximately 650 beds in isolation, and one
transit centre. Since the beginning of the outbreak, MSF has admitted more
than 8,100 patients, among whom around 4,960 were confirmed as having
Ebola. More than 2,300 patients have survived.

.

More than 1,400 tonnes of supplies have been shipped to the affected
countries since March.

How can Washington help foot the bill for a new Brent Spence Bridge and
Western Hills Viaduct?

.

Stop spending money on streetcars, light rail and bike trails, according
to U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie of Northern Kentucky.

.

The Lewis County Republican unveiled a bill Thursday calling for all
transit projects to be stripped from the Highway Trust Fund, which will
become insolvent on May 31 if Congress doesn’t act. That could free up an
additional $10 billion a year to help fix crumbling highways and bridges,
Massie said.

.

“Currently, gas tax revenue is diverted from the federal Highway Trust
Fund for bike paths, sidewalks, mass transit and other local projects,”
Massie said. “But … there is no longer enough money in the Highway Trust
Fund to maintain our nation’s critical highways and bridges while also
funding local projects that have no federal nexus.”

.

Local transit advocates don’t like Massie’s so-called “DRIVE Act.”

.

“For anyone concerned about safety and congestion on our highways, there
is no better dollar spent than a dollar spent on transit,” said
Over-the-Rhine resident Derek Bauman, regional director of All Aboard
Ohio, a statewide transit advocacy group. “Effective transit systems
remove millions of commuters from roadways every day.”

.

snip

.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration has pushed for the revival of
streetcars as part of a plan to help revive urban centers. Many of those
projects have been the focus of contentious debates, mostly over the costs
and merits of streetcars. Such has been the case in Cincinnati with the
$148 million Downtown streetcar project.

.

The Highway Trust Fund provides between $8 billion and $9 billion annually
for transit projects, and Massie is among several fiscal conservatives in
recent years to call for completely eliminating transit projects from the
fund.

House Passes Bill To Aid Koch Brothers, Deregulate Wall Street

WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a
financial deregulation package that would benefit the Koch brothers and
the nation’s largest banks by a vote of 265-143.

The legislation would significantly weaken elements of the 2010 Dodd-Frank
financial reform law dealing with derivatives — the complex products at
the heart of the 2008 meltdown. Many components of the bill approved
Tuesday had previously passed the House with bipartisan support. However,
Democratic backing had been weakest on the most controversial measure,
which allows U.S. firms to skirt domestic regulations on some derivatives
by conducting trades through offshore affiliates in other major financial
centers.

Republicans were almost uniform in their support, with Rep. Walter Jones
(N.C.) the lone GOP holdout. Democratic opposition was broad, with only 46
Democrats voting in support — a marked change from several recent House
votes on Wall Street deregulation that have drawn substantial backing from
dozens, and in some cases an overwhelming majority, of House Democrats.
The White House issued a formal statement last week saying that it
“strongly opposes” the legislation that passed Tuesday.

The bill includes several separate deregulatory measures sought by the
largest Wall Street banks and the Koch brothers, who control significant
financial and energy derivatives operations. Americans for Financial
Reform, the premier policy analysis organization among bank watchdogs,
advocated strongly against the bill alongside consumer groups and the
AFL-CIO.

The bill also reauthorizes the existence of the primary derivatives
regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Bank reform
advocates, however, are confident that the agency cannot be shut down,
unless it’s defunded by Congress. The CFTC’s formal authorization expired
in October 2013.

The Democratic Party has been roiled in recent months by internal
divisions over its relationship with Wall Street, with one wing of the
party attempting to cozy up to financiers in pursuit of campaign cash and
another seeking to rein in banking excess.

.

snip

.

Republicans on the House Rules Committee had blocked more aggressive
oversight amendments from Waters and Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.),
preventing floor votes on them. Lynch’s proposal would have required
greater scrutiny of high-frequency trading. Waters’ amendment would have
banned anyone who had been convicted of violating securities laws, or who
is the subject of a formal ongoing securities law investigation, from
serving on the CFTC’s advisory committee.

.

Former JPMorgan Managing Director Blythe Masters was named to that
committee early this year, but quickly resigned the post. In April,
reports surfaced that she was being investigated by the FBI over the
bank’s commodity trading operations. The company agreed to pay $410
million last year to settle civil allegations of impropriety in Masters’
division.

WASHINGTON The topic of Sen. Ted Cruzs speech Monday morning at Liberty
University remained mysterious on Saturday.

.

Campaign aides continued urging reporters to attend, calling it an
important speech. But they still declined either to shoot down or confirm
speculation that Cruz will use the appearance to announce a presidential
exploratory committee, or even to formally launch his 2016 campaign.

.

snip

.

If Cruz does launch his campaign at Liberty, it would reflect the degree
to which he is pinning his hopes on support from the Christian right. He
also has strong ties to tea partiers, and has pitched himself as a
full-spectrum conservative, able to appeal to those seeking a fiscal
conservative and muscular foreign policy.

Being Gay at Jerry Falwell’s University

A former student’s account of coming out at Liberty University

It was the fifth time that night that my Theology and Biblical Greek
professor was calling. And, like the previous times, no way was I
answering the phone. I knew why he was calling. Earlier that day, I
emailed all of my professors to tell them I’d made the difficult decision
to withdraw from school. As my cell phone went to voice mail, I crawled
into bed under my covers, dreading the next morning when the rest of my
professors would get my email, when the university would call my parents,
when my roommates would ask me why I wasn’t waking up for class. “Why did
I come here?” I asked myself. “Out of all the colleges in the world, why
did I pick this one?”

.

snip

.

Because this church marched to the beat of its own drum-driven worship
music, we thought we were liberal Christians. The irony, though, was that
the congregation was incredibly legalistic and nitpicky. If you smoked,
you were going to hell. If you drank alcohol, you were going to hell. If
you listened to secular music…well you weren’t necessarily going to
hell, but you were backslidden. You can imagine, then, that even if I felt
same-sex desires, I was scared to act on them, let alone think about them.
And anyway, I wasn’t free to think about my sexuality because I was dating
the girl God sent me to marry.

.

Of course, that all changed when we got to Liberty and broke up. I was on
my own, away from my parents, away from my church, and surrounded by
charming Southern gentlemen. Everywhere I turned there were hot guys: in
the dorms, in the showers, in the pool, in the gym. They ate with me, and
studied with me, and wrestled with me during “Man Games” on Thursday
nights. But I wasn’t about to make a move on any of them. After all, this
was Liberty.

.

Liberty was founded by the late Jerry Falwell, a Southern Baptist minister
often known for homophobia, bigotry, and the Moral Majority. My New York
friends know that Falwell’s the guy who blamed 9/11 on the gays. He said
something about pointing his finger in theirourfaces and saying, “You! You
helped this happen!”

.

snip

.

After I made an ambiguous and slightly off-color remark about Oscar Wilde
during her British Literature class, Dr. Prior (who writes for The
Atlantic from time to time) asked me to come talk with her during her
office hours the next day. I agreed to stop by because, well, she was
fabulous, and I couldn’t imagine having an awkward conversation with
someone that fashionable. After all, her daily mantra which she borrowed
from her beloved Wildeis, “One should either be a work of art or wear a
work of art.”

.

snip

.

According to the Liberty Way, homosexual behavior was strictly prohibited,
as were all sexual relationships outside of marriage. The consequence of
spreading one’s seed wasn’t excommunication, but was of a financial
nature: Sex, or any violation of the Liberty Way, earned a student a
certain number of demerits. To remain in good academic standing, you had
to get these demerits off of your record, and the only way to do that was
to pay. When I was there, I think the fine was $10 per demerit on any over
four. So the price wasn’t steep. But the real consequenceand the
administration knew thiswas having to put up with classmates who knew
about your transgression. Not that they would judge you (not all of them)
but they would pray for you, usually publicly: “I don’t really want to say
who and embarrass him, because he’s my roommate and brother in Christ, but
please remember him in prayer, because he’s struggling with
homosexuality.”

.

What’s worse is sometimes they would ask if you wanted an accountability
partner: “You know, just a brother to meet up with once a week to share
your heart with. No judgments. Just love.” But they’d be sure to make it
clear what kind of love. “Just a healthy, godly form of brotherly love.” I
always took this to mean the not gay kind.

.

snip

.

My meeting with the Dean of Men was very short. He told me that someone
had told my RA that Eddie and I were in bed together in our underwear, and
he wanted to know if that was true. When I told him it was, he asked what
we were doing. I told him we were sleeping, which led him to ask why we
were sleeping in our underwear. I asked him what he slept in, and he
blushed and admitted that he also slept in his underwear. I then gave him
my lecture on heteronormativity, to which he simply listened and nodded
his head in a way that told me he didn’t agree with me but that he heard
me.

.

snip

.

Many of us view the world as an ugly place with a few beautiful redeeming
characteristics. Unfortunately, that’s also how we view humans. But what I
learned at Liberty was that this idea is the exact opposite of reality:
The world and the people in it are really wonderful with just a smidge of
ugliness about them. I think the really vocal anti-gay Christians display
this smidge, but I also think the really vocal anti-Christian gays display
it as well. Not tolerating someone for his narrow-mindedness is perhaps
the epitome of intolerance. I learned from my time at Liberty that this
bigotry happens on both sides: not only were there some Christians who
wanted to stone some gays, but there were even some gays who wanted to
stone a few Christians. Just the other day, I saw a man driving a car with
two bumper stickers. One was a rainbow. The other showed a picture of a
lion, and contained the caption “The Romans had it right.” Just another
open-minded gay man, I suppose.
***

.

I ended up dropping out of school less than 30 credits shy of my degree
for a few different reasons. One major reason was because of the internal
conflict that was tearing me into two people: the guy who liked Jesus, and
the guy who liked guys. For a long time, I thought these two parts were
irreconcilable; and so, unable to process this identity conflict, I
withdrew from my classes to try to get my mind around what was going on
inside me.

In Virginias Hills, a Football Crusade

LYNCHBURG, Va. Football is not just a sport at Liberty University, the
Christian institution founded by Jerry Falwell, it is a mission.

.

At Liberty, once a tiny Bible college but now a budding giant, the plan is
for college football big-time, always-on-television college football to
do for evangelical Christians in the 21st century what Notre Dame football
did for Roman Catholics in the 20th.

.

Liberty is already packing the house for its campus games, but Jerry
Falwell Jr., the businesslike son of the founder and the current
university chancellor, gazes from his office in the western hills of
Virginia and sees a worldwide congregation united in faith and in
football.

.

Other football teams run a spread offense. Libertys team will spread the
word.

.

We think there would be a vast, committed fan base of conservative,
evangelical Christians around the country and maybe even folks who are
conservative politically who would rally behind Liberty football, Falwell
Jr. said, smiling at the thought. They would identify with our philosophy.

.

snip

.

There is one other catch, and it weighs heavily on the pivotal task of
recruiting the nations brawniest and fastest high school football players,
an oft-pampered group wooed with all manner of enticements.

.

All Liberty students are expected to live a Christian lifestyle defined by
specific behavioral rules, including a prohibition of alcohol consumption
on and off campus. There is also a detailed and enforced code of conduct
that includes mandatory attendance at a universitywide convocation service
three times a week.

.

Jeff Barber, the Liberty athletic director, concedes that the universitys
rules turn away some athletic recruits.

.

snip

.

With a devoted following of 82,000 students enrolled in its prosperous
online university, Libertys net assets have ballooned by more than $900
million in the last five years. The once sleepy Liberty campus, which used
to be no more than a few nondescript structures and a parking lot, has
been transformed with a multitude of technologically advanced brick
buildings in the Jeffersonian architectural style.

.

snip

.

The amenities and improvements at Liberty were not all added specifically
to entice a big-time football conference to come calling, but football is
at the cynosure of Libertys biggest goal: recognition as a nationally
prominent university.

Staver: Same-Sex Marriage Not A Right Because Homosexuality Used To Be A
Crime
Submitted by Miranda Blue on Thursday, 8/7/2014 11:37 am

On a recent episode of Liberty Counsels Faith and Freedom radio program,
Mat Staver argued that marriage equality cant be a fundamental right
because its not deeply rooted in our history that you have to protect it,
and in fact homosexuality has always been considered a crime against
nature and something thats been criminalized in our culture.

Bill Maher: Liberty University Is Not A Real School

At the end of “Real Time” Friday night, Bill Maher lambasted Liberty
University, the Virginia religious university that has become a mandatory
stop for Republican presidential candidates. (Watch above.)

.

“You can’t expect me to believe anything Mitt Romney said last week at
Liberty University, because a) he’s a liar and b) Liberty University isn’t
really a university,” Maher began. “It’s not like an actual statesman
visited a real college. It’s more like the Tupac hologram visited
Disneyland and said what he would do as president during the Main Street
Electrical Parade.”

.

Romney delivered Liberty’s commencement speech on May 12.

.

Maher noted that Liberty teaches “creation science,” and the idea that
earth was created 5,000 years ago. “This is a school you flunk out of when
you get the answers right,” he joked.

.

Much as conservatives believe gay marriage cheapens their own vows, “I
think a diploma from Liberty cheapens my diploma from a real school,” he
continued. “I worked really hard for four years and sold a lot of drugs to
get that thing.”

The company agreed to pay $410
million last year to settle civil allegations of impropriety in Masters’
division.

PORT VILA, March 16 (Reuters) – Reports from the outer islands of Vanuatu
on Monday painted a picture of utter destruction after a monster cyclone
tore through the South Pacific island nation, flattening buildings and
killing at least eight people.

.

Disaster management officials and relief workers were struggling to
establish contact with the islands that bore the brunt of Cyclone Pam’s
winds of more than 300 kph (185 mph), which destroyed homes, smashed boats
and washed away roads and bridges as it struck late on Friday and into
Saturday.

.

The official toll of eight killed and 20 injured looked certain to rise as
reports began to trickle from the hardest hit parts of the scattered
archipelago.

.

“Many of the buildings and houses have been completely destroyed, Vanuatu
President Baldwin Lonsdale told Reuters in Tokyo. “More than 90 percent of
the buildings have been destroyed.”

.

The Australian Red Cross said it had reports of “total devastation” on the
southern island of Tanna, with most homes destroyed. Tanna, about 200 km
(125 miles) south of the capital, Port Vila, with its 29,000 inhabitants
took the full force of the category 5 storm, with at least two people
dead.

.

Reports from aid groups said the main town on the island of Erromango,
north of Tanna, had suffered similar destruction.

.

A clean-up was under way in Port Vila, where seas were reported to have
surged as high as 8 meters (26 ft), with as much as three-quarters of the
capital’s houses reported destroyed or severely damaged.

.

“Things in Port Vila are improving, people are returning to the market and
getting on with the job of starting the clean-up, but the key thing is we
still have no contact with other provinces,” Tom Perry, from aid agency
CARE Australia, told Reuters by telephone from the capital.

.

“That’s of grave concern because there’s no real sense from anyone of what
the impact has been, but we know in the south in particular, it sat under
the eye of the storm for hours.”
